Southwestern Middle school is a terrific school with friendly staff and terrific teachers. Way to go!

This wonderful school is the best middle school there is in Florida!!! The staff and teachers there treat you like family. I know that because its my 3rd year there and it has been the most fun filled 3 years of my life!!! I give this school 2 HUGE thumbs up!!

Unfortunately I found that the learning environment at SWM was horrible ( 2012-2013 / school year). I was an active parent but I still felt some of my child's teachers were just there not really engaged! The expectations set for the students in my opinion were embarrassingly low and they have a very limited amount of extra curricular activities for the students. There is also a lot of proven bullying at this school. I highly recommend anyone sending your child here to please do your research first!! Not just on these types of school focused websites but max out Google. And take a tour if possible. We were from out of state so it made it more difficult but I wished I never sent my child there. If you have no other choice make sure you stay in contact with the teachers from the first day as a majority of the parents do not do. Let them know upfront what your expectations are for your child and please do not let them set it for you. I truly hope the school improves one day but at this point in time I suggest this school be the last option for your child!

This school is a diamond that shines from the top down. Have been here with my children for the past five years. Even though my kids have gone to high school I will stay here and volunteer because the principal is fantastic. She knows every child by name is truly manages by walking around. She is everywhere and the kids love her. She inspires the children and the parents. Keep up the good work.

Southwestern Middle School is the best place I have ever worked. Parents students teachers support staff administration and the community work together to make Southwestern a school dedicated to help each and every person.

I have been part of the best support staff in the county at Southwestern Middle School for 6 years. I will be here with my cane.... Go Tigers the BEST MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNTY WIDE! I love my school. Our Administrators ROCK! BEST around. )

The principal and her staff are AWESOME and they really care about the students wellfare and that they succeed in school. They are involved in the community and when the going gets rough they dig their heals in and do whatever needs done. Once we had some pretty bad tornadoes come through our town and the principal drove from her home in Daytona (our school was closed due to flooding and other issues) and instead of letting the food in the cafe' go bad she called in some staff and fed the community because alot of homes around the school had been hit by the tornadoes. If they know of children that needs tutoring but can't stay after school they in some cases make arrangements to go to the students home to help that student and/or student. I could go on and on about this school but that would take quite a long time. I believe its the BEST school anywhere and the principal is just as great!!!!

The Principles are always there to helpstudents and teachers. They are very involved and spend many hours here helping to increase positive attitudes and a great learning environment. The teachers are always there to help each other and the students wtih after school media center hours to help student with homework. We have a day were teachers work with students in fun ways and in catch-up work. We all try to support one another in the clubs and after school activites always trying to raise moneies needed for the different clubs and for field trips which are so important to our students so they can see what is out in the world. This school has a wonderful atmosphere.

Southwestern Middle School has a caring atmosphere and a dedication to excellence. The administration is great and the teachers are all dedicated professionals. It is a clean welcoming campus and I have been proud and pleased that both of my children have spent and are spending their middle school years there!

This is the best middle school in Volusia County. The principle Mamie Oatis is awesome and her staff/faculty are the best. They are structured hands on concerned about my childrens safety and education. Ms. Oatis is very hands on and is at practically every function the school holds. She is involved in the community and well respected by business owners along with staff parents students and the district. She has taken that school and turned it around and doesn't expect her staff to do anything she is not willing to do. Her A/P totally rock and its a pleasure to have thme in my childrens life. If I could give 10 stars I would but only five are allowed.

Ms. Oatis is the most hands on principal I have ever seen. She attends every event possible and is always encouraging to the students. The teachers are supportive and helpful. Discipline is very effective at this school. They are firm and proactive in telling students what they expect from them before an event as well as enforcing discipline during an event. The students have a wide variety of after school clubs their 8th grade trip to DC was well chaperoned and planned and they held a great graduation program complete with a dance that welcomed not only students but their families as well. This is a school where a kid can still be a kid and opportunities abound for everyone regardless of social status.

Southwestern is one of the best schools around! I drop my kids off knowing they are safe. They have excellent opportunities for kids to bring up grades or maintain them. The Principal (Mamie Oatis) is excellent! The wheel (art home EC technology and computers) are great classes with excellent opportunities! They also have music(band or chorus). There is little parent involvement as far as helping with lunch but they are always willing to come speak to the kids. They even have a school basketball team! Keep up the excellent work!

My child hates this school it is not organized. The students are mean and unwelcoming they need a punishment policy.
