Southern Dogtrot

This Palmetto Bluff house is modern interpretation of a southern vernacular form known as a dogtrot was featured in the October 2011 issue of Southern Living. A central outdoor space between two enclosed sections provides a naturally cooled outdoor space. The roof shades this space while the two structures funnel breezes through creating a comfortable functional outdoor space appropriate for hot humid climates. The Coles have the ability to close and air-condition their dog trot space in the cold or extreme heat. Folding doors at both side and insulated side walls give them the opportunity to open and close the house to fit any weather situation. The stained doors and windows have a nautical quality that reflects the Cole's maritime interests. The siding is a reverse board and batten cypress creating an airspace which allows moisture to dry quickly and prevent mold. The zinc roof has a soft natural patina that will last for many years
