Levy Art & Architecture is founded on the principle that architecture is the thoughtful synthesis of concepts, materials and their assembly. Our work is inspired by a commitment to research as a basis for the design process. This knowledge, embodied by form, structure and light, defines spaces that transform our daily experience and influence the way we live.
We approach each project as an exploration that is technically innovative and challenges assumed conventions. Sustainability and site specificity are integral to the practice, informing spatial relationships and building systems. We engage in an inclusive process, working with our clients and the community to discover and realize the potential in every program.
First, we now see how the project makes its Place in The city. It is unusual to build from the ground up in San Francisco, more rare in this established and historic part of the 7?7 square mile grid. We had some inkling of this when our project planner recommended against approval at Planning Commission. The reason being a classic San Francisco double bind. While our neighbors were, and are, generally up in arms at our proposals that alter the urban fabric, enlarge a structure and introduce a contemporary language, City Planning felt that if we were to demolish a two unit structure, we should replace it with three.
