  • A modest depression era structure, this house had potential. We were able to "reverse the plan" of the upper level to take advantage of the downtown view. The existing ceiling was removed, and the original roof rafters were exposed and painted. This provided texture and additional height for the space without removing the roof. These rough-hewn rafters helped to form a conceptual aesthetic response; the articulation of features that reveal the varied history of the house. In the front parlor, the original coved ceiling is maintained, in the foyer, a smooth sheetrock surface complemented by a steel mesh rail, speaks to the modern era while, the main living spaces are housed under the painted rafters, referring to a post-industrial, or loft aesthetic. Each type of ceiling plane corresponds to a distinct type of space and historical epoch of the house, these different types of construction, usually hidden, are revealed as this house "tells you about itself."
