California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

We absolutely love RSD. This school has been fabulous for our daughters and we are grateful for the fun and educational environment that RSD provides. We came to RSD in first grade as our first year and the school and staff were extremely welcoming and helpful with the transition from our other school. We are looking forward to many more years to come.

We are a military family that moved in the middle of the year. I was so happy to find out what a wonderful welcoming school RSD was. Within days the office staff new our name could recognize the kids. The principal is always outside in the mornings greeting the kids many by name. This is a large school with a small school feel! The teacher's are amazing! They balance out the curriculum with lots of hands on projects requiring the students to build skills in multiple areas! I am so happy I hope we can stay here for a long time!!

I hardly doubt that "Second and third grade are dropping the ball" based on recent API performance scores. Perhaps the influx of second language students from outside of the Rancho community and the inclusion of resource students has had an impact on standardized test scores over the last few years. The clientele being tested at Rancho is not the same as it was in the past. If you think this does not have an impact on overall test scores then you are sadly mistaken. Class size has also been increased twenty percent over the past two years. Research shows that student teacher ratio impacts learning and overall test performance. I agree that combo classes are not good for students and teachers alike. However during tough economic times they become a necessity.

Second and third grade are dropping the ball. API use to be much higher at this school. Valhalla and Hillsdale are outperforming RSD and the curriculum should be easier to teach. I noticed the difference in scores after the last principal arrived. Coincidence? My raings are neutral because of this. Also from a teacher's perspective combo classes are never a good idea.

Although our 14 yr. old is now at Valhalla Rancho remains a warm loving memory of great teachers and a wonderful school. Savannah has been asked to do her high school community service there and she is really looking forward to putting in the hours. A wonderful school!!!!!

Rancho has a very caring staff who work hard to see that the students are well rounded. The PTA realizing that the arts are not supported by the district see to it that the students have exposure to the arts.

Great school with wonderful teachers and academics. Safe environment. Feels like a private school. Parents are involved. My children love it.

Ranch San Diego is a wonderful school with a wonderful staff. Each and every teacher is there because they love the kids and the education my son and daughter are receiving are second to none! My son scored in the 95th percentile on the STAR testing and without the education Rancho has given him I am not sure where we would be. GO RAVENS!

Both my children attended RSD Elementary up till this year because we moved to another state. We love this school and miss it very much. The teachers are great the principal and staff are very friendly. Over all its a great school and if we didn't have to move my kids would be going to it until they graduate.

Both my children have gone to RSD. My youngest one will graduate this year we will miss all the teachers and the parents. My daughter has ADD and the school has been very supportive specially the special ED department kudos to Ms. Sullivan and Ms. Grasson. Thank you for the art teacher the music department and all the parents that participate in our children's life. Thank you all for the last 8 beautiful years in our lives.

RSD is a wonderful learning environment. My child did Kindergarten year at a school in another local district. RSD was more advanced. The teacher worked with our child and within a few months she was right on track finishing up with excellent grades. The staff has been attentive and caring. I really love this school. Things to watch for the extended day program should have a higher ratio of staff to student in my opinion. I think it is 15 1 currently. There are lots of stay-at-home moms some tend to be click-ish. Students seem to be very caring young people and friendly to each other. Principal is awesome. Teachers we've had for multiple students have been incredible. School has 1950's dance a beach party dance Fall festival Moms and Muffins Dads and Donuts. All fun activities. Could use more of these activities. Not too many fundraisers. Active PTA and high membership/volunteers.

RSD is a great school. My son loves his kindergarten teacher. Everyone there is very nice and helpful. It is a blue ribbon school.

RSD Elementary is a great school. The teachers are very interactive with the parents. The only thing I would change is more art/music. The academics are challenging enough to keep my rather bright child interested and involved.

RSD on paper is an academically sound school. The problems that I've encountered are as follows teachers do not have to accomodate working parents afterschool for conferences etc the teachers are not practicing cleanliness in the classrooms requiring students to use soap and the bathrooms are not fit for a pet to use. The custodians need to clean the restrooms more often. This is not the case with all teachers just some. Beware if your child encounters one.
