I have been pleased in almost every aspect of the education my grandaughter is recieving at GHS. However I have found that too much emphasis is placed on athletics and virtually none on its music and dramatics. The sad fact is that the staff member responsible for student scheduling not only discourages these classes and activities but does not hide their obvious scorn towards those kids who wish to join. It also is apparent that some of the GHS staff are unsupportive of the various choirs and deem them unneccessary. If your child has an interest in any of these activities I strongly advise that a parent or guardian attend every scheduling meeting with them. There is also a problem with bullying. It is mainly verbal. If an accomplished athlete or child of a prominant citizen is the culprit chances are that nothing will be done about it. Even with these two complaints the benefits my grandaughter recieves outweigh the bad and I wouldn't want her in any other school.

Galena High School has 13 Illinois State Scholars this year! I continue to be impressed by this school and my children have had a top notch education here. Two have gone on to earn their Bachelor and master degrees and agree that GHS was instrumental in their success at college.
I have had two kids go through the Galena School District. It was a wonderful educational experience for both.
With only 30% of students prepared for a 4 year college a high teen pregnancy rate and a lack of new technology training this is not a great school. If you have to live in Galena and have high school age students think private school.
I am very impressed by staff at the school as well as the students.
I've had three children attend GHS. Galena is an excellent school in so many ways! I can't say enough about it. In addition to terrific academics GHS offers a top-notch drama program music department and scholastic bowl team. Many sports are offered as well. The teachers are super--very knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile for the students to excel.
Lots of emphasis on sports especially football. Only one foriegn language offered and it is not offered well. Teachers lack in creativity. Band program is exceptional but the vocal department is very bad. The one positive thing is that the students are very close and seem to accept everyone who moves to the area.
