West Side is what you make it. When I was there it was not great but nor was I. When I decided that I wanted more I did not blame the school I blamed myself. Since then I have served in the military graduated from college and make a very good living. The city and school gas definitely gone through many changes. Most not for the better. They are still under represented and over taxed by Indianapolis. When I got a chance I left only to return to visit family and every visit makes me want cut my wrist. I know that I am not part of the problem and I will agree that I am also not part of the solution. The city police and the state police who seem to harass people with out of state plates are going about pumping money into the economy the wrong way. When I am in Gary I spend a lot of money shopping and such. However as soon as I feel the harassment I cut the visit short and spend my money where I think it is appreciated and not taken by the very individuals whose motto is to SERVE AND PROTECT. Humbug. I feel let down by the greed of the state not by the institutions of learning. The ball was dropped years ago and now we must deal with it or leave. I chose to leave.

I am a parent of a westside student I moved here from a different school system.I attented Roosevelt High school .The Gary Cholo system is horrible. That is all That can be said about it.
I am a parent of children who did not originally attend school within the Gary school system. However I grew up in the area and when my family fell on hard times we ended up back in the area. I knew when my children started the system that the schools educational system was substandard. I apologize if many of you in the community will not hear this but it is so true. I tried to leave several times but if you don't have the means like many of the people in the city you are stuck. It is so easy to say the parent need to get involved but the truth is that most of the parents are those that have been their all of there lives and don't know anything different. It is not until you leave the city that you find out what you are truly missing in terms of educational advancements or opportunities. Also what is not understood is that because of the low economic standard of the community as a whole they are not afforded the amenities as other communities and this would include education. I am 46 yrs old and many of the books that are used today are the same books that were used when I was a student at West Side High and the same is with some teachers. Sorry if you are offended!!
For all that posted positive comments about WS thank you!!! For the negative posting what are you doing to assist or correct the problems. If parents aren't involved what can we do to assist the school with getting the deadbeat parents involved. A school is what parents make it. If no involvement is there then the kids will act that way. Lets stop making it seem like the schools let down our kids TAKE RESPONSIBLITIES FOR YOUR ACTIONS. I left West Side after my freshman year and moved out of the state. Before this I thought West Side was "the place to be" but now I just think its "the place to be if you don't have anything better to do." Since leaving this school I have come so much farther in my academic endeavours and I feel sorry for the people that are still there. I never knew there was so much to learn and so many opportunities for my future before I left this school. The only good thing that I can say about it is that I had some really great friends there but honestly I didn't learn anything until I left.
I am a sophomore at West Side High School. The school is not not as bad as you may think. There are many people who care about our grades and the enviroment we are in. The main problem I think West Side has is being a little bit too strict and it needs to be a little bit cleaner. West Side is the best side!!!
This school is good for those who need somewhere to go everyday but for those that want to be something out life i wouldnt recommend this school or any other gary indiana public school because they do not do what they are supposed to do. They are there to be accounted for and to get paid.
I beleive that west side is the best high school ever. It has the best sports program and the best teachers it might not have enough security but that is the school system fault not the school.'Class of 2011'
I attended West Side and graduated from in 1989 and now I have a daughter who is a freshman there now. A lot has changed from then to now. The teachers were very good and didn't have any problems answering questions or assisting when a child doesn't understand. This is my daughter's first year at WS and what I have found is a lot not all of the teachers are willing to go that extra mile to make sure the students are understanding their assignments. All the children at WS are not problem children and should not be treated as if the were. I am a involved parent who cares. I am also concerned with the safety measures at WS. I don't think there is enough security to keep the students safe. Overall I don't think WS is a bad school but I do see room for improvement in those
West Side is a great school- academically and with sports. The GT -gifted and talented- program is also a major contribution towards West Side's excellence.
I think West Side high School is the worst school in the State of Indiana. Yes I go to West Side just because we live in Gary Indiana. This Shool Is not safe at all for any child to attend. This school does not have any extracurricular activites that interset every race in that school. There is also no parent or teacher involvement at West Side. The Academic programs are lacking every where math and english. The problem with this is the Istep+ scores are lower every year. This shchool needs better teachers who want to teach students. And also Teachers try to use better materials whwn teaching so that the students may learn better.
West Side High School is the best high school in Gary. Unlike places such as Emerson that focus more on a lofty ideal they call talent or other places that violence consumes daily West Side is making strides in the right direction. There are unlimited possibilities for children that WANT to learn. If you are one of the parents that would like to overhaul the teachers and administration take a careful look at your child to find the true source of the problem. I think I have the credentials to say it is the fault of the students for not learning because I too graduated from West Side High School in 2003 and I am going to one of the best 4-year institutions in the country on full scholarship...oh it's not need based either. Administration is great teachers care for those students that care and that is that.
With a child in West Side I feel that administration should have an overhaul. They have been there since the school opened. These teachers have an old way of teaching our children and should go back to school to learn how to teach our children. Get new and younger teachers who better understand our children.
The west side teacher's share great to the students but now I graduated in the year of 1986. My kids go there. One graduated in june of 2004 and one graduates in the class of 2007. So now whats up cause I love west side high school.
