California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

South Valley is a truly great school. The teachers and staff are very invested in the students. They have excellent coaches and many sports to choose from. The wrestling program is unbeatable and they offer junior varsity teams in most sports to allow more students the opportunity to grow athletically. South Valley offers many opportunities for students to get involved including theater band yearbook ASB CJSF and more. They also have a dual immersion program. I have been impressed with the efforts teachers counselors and the principal have made to improve the school in any way possible. Parents there are opportunities for you too through the Parent Club and ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee).

South Valley is an amazing school! My daughter loves it here and she just transfered from another school and is in the 8th grade! She was very shy at first but the children there are so nice and now she has many friends.

Bottom line- schools can only do so much- parents should be held accountable. I have seen both ends of the spectrum across gusd. Stay in touch stay informed and stay on top of your child and thier work. Team up with your teachers be a positive role model and your child will do well.

I went to this school for sixth grade and half or seventh. I went half of seventh because I couldn't stand going here! It's a horrible school! I would advise a parent who is thinking about sending their child here to think twice. The kids who go here are horrible and don't care about the education they are recieving. The teachers are awesome but other then that it's a bad school. I hated being here. The school is the worst in Gilroy and the API scores aren't even good! I hated going here and I'm sure your child would to.

South Valley has a great elective program. For a middle school it's far beyond what most other area middle schools offer. The teachers really care about the kids and it's obvious in the quality of my childs education that this was absolutely the best choice for our family. Don't be fooled by test scores this is an excellent school. Specifically the excellerated science program and the art program. They even have digital photography. Our two kids have been more than happy to attend this school. We are proud of our choice to move here.

South Valley has plenty to offer all Junior high kids. The have several different clubs afterschool programs and sports to choose from. I like that they have become very strict with the grade requirement for participating in various activities. The athletics department has a mandatory 'athletes academy' that all athletes must attend. In addition to the academy they pass out a weekly grade sheet to be signed by the student's teachers. There is no participation allowed if you cannot keep your grades up. The band program is very good and they have a Disneyland trip for the advanced band. Again SV is very strict with grades and you must have the grades in order to participate in the trip. The parents seem very involved. The school has fun and educational nights (like Math night) to get parents involved.
