New York State Assessments (NYSA)

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See http://www.engageny.org/sites/default/files/resource/attachments/test_score_release_letter_to_parents.pdf from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes. In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to mee

My child was not happy at this school. I agree that there are teachers who are ineffective using belittling and mocking at times to embarass the students. My children would come home stressed from teacher's sarcasm and ignoring of problem behavior (e.g. students cursing at and around my children without any action taken). I seriously thought about home schooling. I was surprised that the principal made such an effort to have fun at school that they had a dress up as a "superhero or villain day" and a separate "zombie or vampire day". I would have liked to have seen more academic motivation through math science and grammar games.

Most of the teachers at this school are highly ineffective. The students are all treated like juvenile delinquents because of a few bad apples. The teachers actually bully the kids in some instances. To top it off the kids don't learn anything. Discipline has always been a problem. I had a lot of hope in the new principal but I am not sure he can get past the obstacles to bring about change.

I feel the teachers try but require more parent involvement. Where do the kids that go to elementary school within the district go? They don't seem to be part of the student body.

I've been going to the Glen Cove The Robert M. Finley Middle School for 4 years. Grades 5-8. Now they only do grades 6-8. Anyway the quality of this school. The school quality for teachers is pretty good. Most (90%) of teachers here do a great job and love what they do. Then you got(like all schools) the other teachers. These are the teachers who seem power obsessed or just don't know how to teach but this school is a winner of a lot of teacher of the month awards. Next is After school activities. This school has a nice amount of after school things to be involved in. a lot of sport's stuff a media club and even a student council (Which is more of a charity group). As for recommending this school to people I would say yes.
