The children of the Byrd School are intelligent and highly motivated as are their parents. The school would definitely step up to another level of excellence if there were more transparency and input to processes like Teacher Evaluation Gifted Programs and opportunities to improve areas outside of the basic curriculum. The shared goal of excellence for our children can go even further than it does right now if there was an open dialog and input from all stakeholders!

Academically the curriculum is rigorous. Most of the teachers are dedicated. Great kindergarten music 2nd grade reading teachers. Fabulous resource room teacher. However Byrd falls short socially. Their anti-bullying program is weak. Parent/student handbook policies not enforced. Students are supervised at recess by only 2 or 3 "lunch aides" who are well meaning but overwhelmed. Principal (or teachers) NEVER make an appearance on the playground at recess. If your child is shy bullied is a bully or has any type of social issue it is brushed off except for a one program that seems to be just for show. Rarely will principal step in to resolve a bullying issue.Parent has to contact her several times and still no results. When kids misbehave/bully their parents are not contacted so the parents never know about the behavior. So disappointed--could be 4-5 stars if administration was a bit more compassionate regarding the social stuff.

We've been very impressed with quality of teachers and educational programs at Byrd. Unbelievable parental involvment as well.

Committed educators produce quality education. Teacher quality/commitment varies by grade level. You won't find a more exceptional Kindergarten teacher. Phenominal! Although if your child has a learning disability eg. ADD/ADHD this school is not for you. If you like mandated teacher-parent conferences your needs won't be met here either. It is extremely rare to find some educators available after contract hours. My partiality to 'above the call of duty teachers' is derived from my first-hand experience and knowlege of what's available in school systems outside of Glen Rock NJ. Not the school I had hoped it would be.

My Daughter previously attended 3 other schools prior to moving to Glen Rock; we belive the Principal Teachers and Parents made her transition to the area a pleasure. I do not believe any other school could in any way top this school it is simply perfect.
