The original structure was 2-story (approximately 900 sq/ft.). In 1995, we added an additional 2080 square foot 2-story addition that sits on its own foundation. We had an architect come and check out the original foundation which was limestone from the old penitentiary quarry. We were advised that additional protection from weathering should insure at least another hundred years of service. When we poured the foundation for the addition we replaced the sidewalk in front of the house and wrapped the existing foundation in concrete. The attic is an unfinished 1040 sq/ft space that we intend to turn into a master bedroom someday. We did our best to match the addition to the original Victorian style by maintaining 9 and 10 ft ceilings and scrolled archways.…
What I love
Our home is in the ideal location in the most coveted part of Boise ? the North End. During the time that I worked downtown (the heart of which is 5 blocks away), I did absolutely no driving. The YMCA is 3 blocks away. The best schools in Boise are: Longfellow Elementary (roughly 200 students) is 4 blocks; North Junior High is 1 Block and Boise High School is 3 blocks away. The Cathedral of the Rockies (First United Methodist) is also 3 blocks away. At the end of 12th St. is Camel?s Back Park with a huge jungle gym, playground and BBQ Picnic areas, hiking and mountain biking trails. A bit further into the foot hills (about 1 ½ miles) is a motocross dirt bike trail built and maintained by Honda. The Boise River is roughly 2 miles from our home and we often walk the greenbelt for fun and exercise. Fishing in the Boise is year round with trout and steelhead being the biggest draw. Motivated walkers and bikers can take the greenbelt all the way to Lucky Peak Reservoir and Discovery State Park. We are about 8 blocks from the state capitol building and 12 blocks from St. Luke?s Regional Medical Center. Our secret pride and joy however is the historical Hyde Park District with outstanding restaurants, casual eateries, a cozy coffee shop, free wireless internet, an ice cream and candy shop, a post office, bike store and barber shop. Hyde Park is 1 block over on 13th St. There are many beautiful parts to Boise, but none can offer the location, amenities, and good long time neighbors (we?ve lived here since 1985 and so have most of our neighbors) like 1107 N 12th St. can and does.Neighborhood Description
Our neighborhood is financially mixed with many professionals, blue collar and self employed folks. Boise is not yet racially diversified to speak of and the so there a few if any racial tensions. I am half Malaysian and have lived in Boise since 1967 and have never personally experienced or witnessed any notable prejudice. The North End has a reputation for being a yuppie/hippy enclave and if anything our "color" might be considered green although we have our share of F150 Quad Cabs and Hummers parked up and down the street. I have been all over the US and around the world while in the military but if there is a better place to raise a family than Boise (and please pronounce it "BOY-see" not "BOYZEE") I have not seen it. Sheesh, after reading this, I sound like I'm running for city council.More Less
