My Notes

Edit
A labor of love is an understatement when referring to 122 Flyway Drive, a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired residence that sits privately back from the beach, blending subtly in to its natural surroundings. As the 'father' of organic architecture, Wright not only used the architectural philosophy in his own designs but he inspired others with it for years to come. The philosophy promotes harmony between the natural world and the man-made structures created in it, and Wright believed that a building and its site should go hand-in-hand, becoming inseparable. At 122 Flyway Drive, this is seen in how the home relates subtly but realistically to the Island's natural dunes, thick brush, and beach. To maintain a relationship with the land, Wright's designs were most successful as horizontal structures, but Island regulations, the size of the lot, and the striking ocean views all allocated for a more vertical design. To compensate, architect Grady Woods designed tiers of flat rooflines, overhangs, and staggered wall gardens that bring the home closer to nature and the ground. In the fashion of many beachfront homes, the floorplan is a reversal with the first level consisting of three guest bedrooms, a media/family room and adjoining sunroom, a fitness area, and multiple accesses to the saltwater dipping pool, spa, and deck. Upon entering the home, the attention to detail and exquisite craftsmanship quickly come to light in the wooden wall niches, wood ceiling trim, and striking art glass in the foyer. Upstairs, you're greeted with a beautiful open gallery space at the top of the stairs. There are only three doors on the second floor of the home, reinforcing Wright's open floor plan design, and essentially creating one large space that is instead divided by entryways and the exquisite central brick chimney that runs through the length of the home. Everything leads up to this moment as you make your way towards the Great Room, where you are greeted with 30 foot ceilings with striking white oak trim, geometric windows with never-ending views to the Atlantic, and cove lighting that creates a soft glow and hum of ambiance. Embraced in walls of windows, the room reinforces the home's location on the beach - once again connecting it to its natural surroundings - and providing not only visual access to the outdoors, but also physical access to the numerous decks, screened porch, and balconies. The windows are also custom Marvin prairie windows with tempered safety glass. In the entire home, the adjacent dining room is the most intricate in its detail and design, but the treatment is still done simply and with clean lines. The kitchen almost feels like it's from a bygone era if not for the preeminent appliances that give it a modern edge. A Viking range, two Viking ovens and a warming drawer, a Sub-Zero refrigerator over two refrigerator drawers, two ice makers, and a wine cabinet remind you that it's good to be in charge in this kitchen. The countertops, including the large central island, are black granite and the cabinets with oil-rubbed bronze knobs hail from custom cabinet and furniture designer Dale Hostetler. Intricate wood details and craftsmanship, à la the Arts & Crafts movement, are again seen in the details and carvings of the cabinets. A separate panty provides additional storage and space. Entering the third floor master suite, there's a sitting room with an art glass window that opens to overlook the great room below and a coffee bar that adds a convenient element. In the bedroom, the great brick chimney has made another appearance and the floor-to-ceiling windows are placed in a rhythmic way, conveniently bringing in the ocean views to be enjoyed from the custom-built king bed. Custom accents can be seen discretely in the metal designs of the master bath dual vanity and hints of Cherokee red are found in the granite floors and shower.
