My Notes

Edit
15 Napier Lane, dating c.1884, belongs to the early history of San Francisco and is among a small group of Telegraph Hill houses from the second half of the 19th century that survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. Many of the earliest houses on the Steps were built by immigrant workers who plied their trades along the wharfs below the Hill.Wooden walkways created over time were used by workers to make their way down the steep hillside to the wharfs. The Hill had always been steep, but became steeper during the mid-to-late-19th-century when commercial quarries blasted away rock needed for roads and seawalls. Eventually, the Filbert Steps became a pathway littered with garbage, an image hard to imagine today. After moving to the corner of Napier Lane and Filbert in the 1940s, Grace Marchant took it upon herself to clean away the garbage. Over the next 30 years, she transformed the stairs into the magical Grace Marchant Garden. The garden is filled with lush foliage, is home to a flock of wild parrots, and provides a special setting to houses like 15 Napier Lane that speak to the early history of San Francisco. Please visit: www.15NapierLane.com  More Less
