My Notes

The elegant Charles Henry Shattuck House was designed in 1923-24 by the renowned architects Johnson, Kaufman and Coate, who also created the exceptional American landmarks: the LA Times Building, Caltech, and Hoover Dam. Having had only four owners, this Monterey Colonial Revival residence is a rare architectural gem as it survives in its original configuration. The tasteful appearance has been given character by elements consistent with its style: enclosed patios with flagstone floors, over 90 small-paned casement windows and French doors, extensive grillwork, turned balusters, oak and Gladding McBean tile flooring and decorative wrought-iron and bronze light fixtures. Approached through an entry courtyard, a handsome rustic front door opens to the entry with step-down living room on the left and dining room on the right. The living room overlooks a restful walled, oak-shaded courtyard with Spanish paver flooring and a Malibu tile fountain, and the splendid dining room has French doors on three sides. The kitchen with cabinets from the 1920 s was updated in 1950; a butler s pantry has a German silver sink and white oak counters. A laundry and a bedroom and bath complete the first level. The second floor consists of four bedrooms, three baths and a separate linen room, rarely found in Pasadena houses; there are more than twelve arched openings used to gain access to these upstairs rooms. Two of the bedrooms have balconies, and two have views of the San Gabriel Mountains framed by stately palm trees. In addition to a California basement, there is a detached two car garage and storage shed. The property is located in a premier neighborhood surrounded by grand homes; it is being sold in its current as is condition; seller will do no repairs.  More Less

Neighborhood: South East

Zillow predicts South East home values will increase 6.5% next year, compared to a 6.2% rise for Pasadena as a whole. Among South East homes, this home is valued 312.2% more than the midpoint (median) home, and is valued 45% more per square foot.

Foreclosures will be a factor impacting home values in the next several years. In South East, the number of foreclosures waiting to be sold is 55.1% less than in Pasadena, and 79% lower than the national average. This lower local number could help South East home values rise more quickly than other regions in Pasadena.
