The wooded hillsides and decomposed granite outcroppings that define Pasadena's western border with LA are a playground for architect Stephen Hans Nuetzel. His work is informed by the distinct hillside topography, expansive views and rich architectural heritage of the area. According to Mr. Nuetzel, this Modernist structure is a revision and expansion of the mid century house that occupied the beautiful hillside lot. The new design includes a deep pile foundation expanding the existing lower level, a revamped floor plan with walls of glass, laminated beam ceilings and expansive decks. The modern kitchen opens to the living room and incorporates a fireplace and unique window placements. At the upper level, a long ridge beam starts at one corner of the garage and rises to the opposite corner, sending the master bedroom ceiling soaring and directing one's gaze to the mountain panorama beyond. Fully finished two-car garage and large street-to-street lot add value to the equation.
