My Notes

This architectural jewel, built in 1927, is a fine example of the Spanish Colonial Revival Style. Inspired by rich, elaborate precedents in Spain and Latin America, the revival was born in California and popular in the 1920s and early 30s. This distinguished 5,600-sq.-ft. home was extensively renovated in 2005 with exceptional attention to detail and purity of style. The remodel updated systems, provided additional living space, and enhanced the house with antique architectural elements. The home sits on a desirable double lot in Broadmoor. A series of courtyards with water features provide tranquil settings ideal for outdoor living and entertaining.A wall lined with a profusion of roses encloses a level front lawn. A walkway leads to an entry courtyard with a tile fountain and limestone floor. The house has stucco exterior walls and a red barrel tile roof. High arched mahogany doors with antique hardware open to a double-height entry hall where round arch windows with leaded glass look out on the entry courtyard. Ceiling beams here and in other areas of the house were reclaimed from a 13th century Spanish monastery. Floors are terra cotta with tile inserts. A graceful staircase in the entry has wood treads, tile risers and custom wrought iron railing and handrail. Hand-troweled plaster walls, dark-stained fir woodwork and gorgeous custom tile are found throughout the house, giving interiors cohesiveness and distinct Spanish character.Steps in the entry lead down to a living room with dark hardwood floors that are original to the house. The fireplace, wood-burning with a gas starter, has an antique French limestone surround. A three-panel, leaded glass window on one wall looks out on the entry courtyard, while a big picture window with a tile-covered window seat on the opposite wall overlooks the back yard. An adjoining sunroom has wrap-around windows of custom leaded glass and a door to the back yard. Steps in the living room lead to a formal dining room with a picture window and window seat set in a wide niche. French doors open to a butlers pantry with big walk-in pantry and a tile bar with display cabinetry and Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer drawers. The spectacular kitchen, installed in the 2005 remodel, has a vaulted ceiling with reclaimed beams and a magnificent antique chandelier. Other features include custom cabinetry, marble counters, and tile backsplash. A large center island affords counter seating and great storage space. Stainless steel appliances, all by Viking, include a 6-burner gas range with a plaster Ventahood trimmed in old timber. There is a built-in desk set in a round arch, as well as an ample space for informal dining.Across the hall is a big family room with hardwood floors and a wall lined in cabinetry with a built-in desk. A gas fireplace has a custom plaster surround and mantel of limestone and old timber. Flanking the fireplace are diamond pane glass doors that open to another courtyard on the side of the house. French doors lead to an adjacent office where three arched windows look out on the front lawn. The office also enjoys access to the side terrace. A powder room situated just off the entry serves the main level. It has custom tile walls, a sink set in an antique chest topped with honed marble, and a crystal chandelier original to the house.Four bedrooms, all with hardwood floors, are situated on the second level. A big master suite has a vaulted ceiling and a gas fireplace flanked by built-in shelving. There are two sets of French doors with diamond pane glass one opens to a Juliet balcony, the other to a private balcony overlooking the backyard. A bright eastern exposure makes the balcony an ideal place to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning sun. The master bath features a soaking tub, tile shower with bench and glass door, and double vanities topped in lovely green marble. The suite also boasts a big walk-in closet with built-ins. Each of the other three bedrooms is endowed with built  More Less
