The Caloosahatchee National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), administered as a satellite refuge of J.N. "Ding" Darling NWR, is located in Lee County on the Caloosahatchee River within the city of Fort Myers. The refuge was established by President Woodrow Wilson on July 1, 1920, through Executive Order 3299 as a ". . . preserve and breeding ground for native birds". Originally, the Caloosahatchee refuge consisted of several mangrove islands. However, shoreline development, dredging of the river, and construction of the I-75 bridge has changed the physical arrangement and appearance of these islands. Today, the refuge still remains approximately 40 acres of mangrove shorelines and upland island habitats. The Florida Power and Light Company's Orange River Power Plant and the Orange River's outflow. The warm water outflow from the power plant is a major wintering area for the endangered West Indian manatee.

Fabulous fishing from the dock for snook and redfish. Boat minutes and fish for world renown Tarpon. Area is known for Manatees and actually come to feed. Intertubing, water skiing, or jet skiing. Boat to Fort Myers, Sanibel, Captiva, Cape Coral and enjoy a fine restaraunt or music. Privacy and a great safe neighborhood. Next to the National Caloosatchee Wildlife Refugee. Several regional parks with everything from horseback riding to biking and meandering tributaries represent the newest leg of the Great Calusa Blueway. Discover places you want to visit more than just once. Among them: Caloosahatchee Regional Park: 765 acres of pine trees and oaks shade campers, hikers, horseback riders and off-road cyclists here in historic Alva. A day dock protects the kayak area, creating a calm lagoon-like place to launch or pull up. Paddle close to shore dig your fingers into the sandy bottom for fossilized sharks teeth and other fossils. Hickey's Creek Mitigation Park: A great day trip from Caloosahatchee Regional is to go downstream to the mouth of Hickey's Creek and head up the corkscrew of a creek to the park. Stretch your legs and picnic. This creek teems with life, from Doritos-sized freshwater turtles to 4-foot-tall sandhill cranes, bird watching, nature study and photography and a place to stretch. Orange River: At its mouth and just upstream you find manatees in the winter. Farther upriver from Lee County Manatee Park, you find a slice of Old Florida. A gentle current makes travel easy both directions.Caloosahatchee Creeks Preserve: Perfect for the novice paddler. A boardwalk offers sightings of marshes and wildlife.
