My Notes

You will feel as though you are stepping back in time as you enter this spectacular private estate. "Cold Spring" is one of Louisville's most historically and architecturally significant homes. The original house was built by Joshua Fry Speed and his wife Fanny Hennings Speed in 1867. The house was built on part of the original Farmington plantation and currently retains 6.72 acres. In 1911 the house underwent extensive renovation transforming the simpler Victorian Speed home into an Italian Villa. This magnificent home features 12 foot ceilings, 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, gilded and crystal chandeliers, front and rear staircases, and elegant marble and wood carved mantels. The entrance hall features a lovely turned staircase and black and white marble flooring orginating from the second Galt house and seamlessly transitions to the first floor loggia. The elegant dining room with a fireplace features and elegant crystal chandelier, rich moldings and french doors that open to the drawing room and front patio. The drawing room is appointed with deep moldings, a fireplace and an exquisite gilded and crystal chandelier. The focal point of the home is the richly paneled and velvet trimmed library with french doors that open to the gorgeous view of the private lawn and elaborate parterre gardens. The second floor features an elegant master suite with a sleeping chamber with a fireplace, a dressing room with a fireplace and a master bath. Additionally, there are 4 bedrooms, a study, a sitting room and 3 full bathrooms on the second floor. The third floor was primarily used as a playroom. The French provincial carriage house was added around 1911 and features a 3 car garage and second floor apartment with 690 square feet. "Cold Spring" was featured in Country Houses of Louisville 1 by Winfrey Blackburn and R. Scott Gill. Brochures are available upon request.
