The historic Wilkenson-Pike House (1825), exhibited on the Providence Preservation Society tour, is a large single-family home but is zoned two-family and has been, in recent history, used both ways.

20 Sheldon Street is the fourth house off Benefit Street and is in the heart of the Historic District.
Nearby institutions
Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, Rhode Island Hospital, the Rhode Island Historical Society and major corporations downtown are all walking distance.
The house is one block from the restaurants and antique shops of Wickenden Street and two blocks from those on South Main Street. Ives Street, off Wickenden, is sporting four new restaurants.
East Side Market and two Whole Food Markets are a short drive away, as is in-town shopping at Wayland Square and Thayer Street. Providence Place Mall is a five-minute drive.
Schools
The Vartan Gregorian Elementary School (public) and the French American School of RI are close by. Walking distance or a short drive away are four more pre-schools and three excellent private primary/secondary schools ? Wheeler, Lincoln and Moses Brown.
Recreation
For recreation, walk to India Point Park for sunsets over the bay, the Community Boating Center for sailing lessons, Waterfire on the Providence River, Brassil Children?s Park, or a southbound bike path that starts at the Point Street Bridge. Another bike path is being planned to go north from India Point Park. A new boat launching ramp on the Seekonk River, a quarter mile away, is scheduled to open in the Spring on Gano Street, next to the Little League Field and near one of the dog parks, south of the community garden. The best recreation may simply be walking the streets and lanes of the Historic District.
The Athenium, a private library, and the RISD Museum, are both walking distance along Benefit Street. Another museum is in the planning stages at the Benefit Street Armory. Brown University libraries may be open to you, depending on your academic status or research needs.

What I love about the home
A well-known architect once commented, "This is not a house; it's a painting." Every room is special. The details on the staircase were a highlight of the Providence Preservation Society tour, as were the fine wide pine floors and see-through fireplace. Nothing could be more quietly elegant than the high ceiling and marble fireplace in the living room, and nothing could be cozier than relaxing in the paneled family room, with its brick floor, warm fire and the scene through the picture window of the cedar trees past the lawn. The master bedroom is large and bright, with two large closets and a sitting area in front of the hearth, surrounded by antique Delft tiles.
