My Notes

Edit
?When I first entered the East gates, I felt the house put its arms around me.?

These are the words of Hollywood screen legend, Kathryn Grayson, describing the legendary La Mesa Drive estate that she called home for sixty-five years. Built by Sir Alexander Kemp in 1926, the English Tudor home is situated on a rare large double lot with 7 bedrooms, 4 baths and breathtaking views of the Riviera Country Club.

Old World craftsmanship inhabits every inch of this wonderful Santa Monica home including English Oak paneling, rounded archways, high-pitched beams and hand crafted leaded windows.

The dramatic living room, with its grand scale and volume, was made for entertaining. Upon entering the space you are visited by the history of a bygone era. On any given evening the soaring cathedral ceilings provided the perfect backdrop for Ms. Grayson to share a duet with Mario Lanza, while Cole Porter or Sammy Cohn accompanied them on the Knabe grand piano. Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and a who?s who of Hollywood royalty have relaxed in front of the fireplace while enjoying the views through floor to ceiling stained glass windows. And of course, no Kathryn Grayson affair was complete, without the hostess gracing her guests with a Puccini opera from the minstrels? gallery above.

The generously sized dining room sits behind a double door entry, offers views of the golf course and whispers of long ago dinner parties, each with a guest list that would rival any Hollywood premiere. The oak paneled library is complete with fireplace, built-ins and secret hideaways and closets. The rest of the downstairs public area is rounded out by the eat-in kitchen, breakfast room, walk-in butler?s pantry, telephone booth and powder room.

At the top of the grand staircase are the living quarters including the master bedroom with attached dressing room, master bath, walk in cedar closet and exquisite country club views. On several occasions, Ms. Grayson would awake to find Howard Hughes asleep in one of the guest bedrooms. The reclusive billionaire was not shy about climbing over the main fence and letting himself in to the estate in the middle of the night.

The private grounds are populated with plum, avocado and four different varieties of orange trees. The scent of camellias can be enjoyed across the rolling green lawn, whether relaxing at the statue garden or resting beneath the shade of the oversized Morton Bay fig tree.
