My Notes

This classic, unique mid-century home is a quintessential example of Bay Region Modernism. Built in 1952 for his own family, this home was designed by John Bolles, the well-known San Francisco architect who designed Candlestick Park. Built to last, with almost 4,000 square feet of living and storage space, 2201 Lyon provides gracious living on three levels, with the first level built of reinforced concrete with six-inch thick pre-colored concrete floors.Throughout the home, wood paneled walls add a rich glow to the living, dining, staircase and bedroom areas.Built-in bookshelves and cabinets separate the formal entry from the living room and a raised hearth holds a green marble fireplace with attached seating bench. The beamed ceilings have been lightened with whitewash; up-lighting and stunning modern track lighting gently illuminate the living/dining areas and provide spot lighting for artwork. At the end of the dining room is an original cityscape mural that Bolles commissioned from Jose Moya del Pino, a well-known Spanish American artist whose many murals can be found around the Bay Area. The dining room opens to the homey kitchen expanded in 1987 to include a breakfast area, laundry closet and half bath. Additional cabinets installed in the expansion seamlessly match the original cabinets.Up a wide, skylit staircase is the master suite with office area, walls of closets and a marble tile bath. The master bedroom opens to a deck with views to the San Mateo Bridge on a clear day. Arranged along the hallway are four smaller bedrooms and a tiled bathroom created for the Bolles family by a local artist in the style of Piet Mondrian. There are removable panels between the first two and the second two bedrooms and the last bedroom has views and opens to the same deck as the master suite. The staircase and bedrooms have new carpet.Downstairs from the living level is a family/playroom with benches and bookshelves that opens to the large level and very private patio and garden through newly replaced floor-to-ceiling double-paned windows and doors. A sixth bedroom, added for the Bolles 5th child, is off the family room and has its own bath.
