This uniquely home was designed by the noted architectural firm of Alfred B. Mullett and Sons. Alfred B. Mullett was one of the leading architects of federal & state buildings and private residences in the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. He was the architect of the San Francisco National Mint and the supervising architect of the Old Executive Office Building in Washington, DC. This house was commissioned by a prominent banker and was totally renovated in the 2008. The second owner was the daughter of the founder of National Geographic and her grandfather was Alexander Graham Bell. It is on an avenue of the grandest houses in Washington, DC.*** When you arrive at the property you have an attractive front yard and a grand covered front porch. The house has 2 add'l porches in the back on the first floor that are covered, one is used for dining outside and the other is used for viewing children or swimmers. There is a large upstairs covered porch on the back, which is used year round as a sitting area. All porches have ceiling fans. All original plaster has been replaced or restored. All original plaster molding has been restored. A La Cornue French stove was imported from France with gas & electric burners & two ovens. La Cornue cabinets were custom made in France and installed with granite countertops in the kitchen. A Miele wall unit coffee/cappuccino maker and a microwave/convention oven were added to the kitchen. Subzero refrigerators were placed in the kitchen area and an added custom stainless steel refrigerator was placed in the large pantry.*** All bathrooms have been totally renovated with granites and marbles. All fixtures are Kohler brass and French gold fixtures. The entire house has new water and boiler piping. All electrical wiring was replaced with modern wiring. All heartwood pine floors were restored and refinished. After 1920 no 300-year-old white pines were left in the US for heart wood pine flooring.*** A custom swimming pool & grounds were designed by a landscape architect to reflect the beauty of the house. Antique lighting from grand homes and hotels in Europe are located throughout the house. The back yard brick grill with slate countertop has a Viking 54? grill, warming drawer, wok, & refrigerator built in. A wine rack has also been placed near the grill.*** Dual energy efficient heating systems were placed in the house so the least cost energy source can be utilized. A Weils-McLean Ultra boiler can be used for radiator heat or the Carrier Infinity high-energy heat pumps can be used for heat or air conditioning. New high speed internet wiring and phone lines (including fiber optic cables) are placed throughout the house and outside electrical lines have been placed underground. All old lead water pipes from the street have been replaced with new copper piping since this could affect children and adults.*** The attic has a large finished area used as a personal library but could be used as a large bedroom. Also, there is unfinished space for storage in the attic with the option of putting in an additional bathroom. The lower level is surrounded by windows and has 1500 square feet dedicated to a play room/TV room with storage, full bath & laundry room. ***The house is approximately 8500 sq. ft. with 500 square feet dedicated to utilities and storage. The house sits on one of the largest privately owned lots in Kalorama. Outstanding for parties and teas! Historic building designation has not yet been utilized.
Neighborhood Description
The most beautiful architecture in Washington, DC is in Kalorama. It has sometimes been called the "Neighborhood of the Presidents" since several presidents have lived in Kalorama.
 
What I love about the home
It is truly an ambassador's or executive's home. The house is spacious and beautiful. The backyard and pool are private and great for outdoor entertaining or enjoying the day with family and friends.
