Built in 1908, this stately residence was designed by architect Claude K. Howell for Harry S. Binswanger, owner of a prominent Richmond glass company. Howell designed the three-story facade in the fashionable Italian Renaissance Revival style, to which he added Colonial Revival accents. The home is distinguished by exceptionally rich detailing on the interior and exterior, making it one of the finest homes on Monument Avenue. The interior is both elegant and functional, with richly-carved woodwork, hardwood floors inlaid with border patterns different in each room, and spacious formal rooms. The living hall, formal double parlours and dining room are all distinguished by exquisite detailing, skillfully rendered in plaster, polished wood, and stained and leaded glass. The staircase is one of the chief architectural glories of the house accentuated by a screen of fluted Roman Doric columns and illuminated by a triple stained-glass window depicting blooming wisteria. The study right next to it is entered from the dining room through a pair of beautifully-crafted double-leaf doors with Frank Lloyd Wright-style masterpiece glasswork. The second and third floors have been updated and modernized, while retaining the original architectural integrity. There are three bedrooms on the second and another three on the third floor. The master bedroom on the second floor extends across the entire front of the house, offering grand views of Monument Avenue. The suite features new marble ???his??? and ???hers??? master bathrooms and six closets. A modern two-car brick garage with a handsome deck/patio, and an English style garden on the east side of the house complete the rear outside space.
