2712 Folsom Street is a private home retrofitted for a person using a wheelchair. Its most unique feature is that it has a full-sized elevator in a small, typical 19th century Philadelphia rowhouse. To allow for direct street access the front steps were removed and the front door was expanded in width and height and a new large transom installed. All this was accomplished without changing the house's proportions or disturbing the street scape. Inside the entire living room was lowered and the staircase to the second floor was reversed. The kitchen area has French doors opening to a backyard deck. The second floor has a private bedroom, the remainder of the space has been opened up to provide access from the elevator to another seating area, the laundry corner, the roll-in shower, and the vanity sink.
