My Notes

Live on The Alameda and be part of history in the stunning Thomas Prince House. In their popular book Classic Houses of Portland Oregon 1850-1950, authors Hawkins and Willingham describe the Thomas Prince House as one of the most inventive houses in the Colonial Revival style, noting that it is an excellent example of asymmetrical architecture, both in plan and its elevations. This landmark residence embraces classical Georgian detailing with an all brick exterior, keystone accents, Doric entrance columns, balustrades, modulated cornices and a hipped slate roof with pedimented dormers. The house was designed and constructed by the Oregon Home Builders in 1916 with four unique levels in the main residence paired with a matching detached Carriage House with a one bedroom suite that has been used at various times as a nanny quarters, a rental apartment and a photo studio. In total, there are over 25 separate rooms to explore and enjoy. To complement the residence, the grounds have been thoughtfully designed and professionally landscaped. Within this lush park-like setting, there are three separate outdoor areas designed for relaxation and entertaining, including a front brick terrace, a private cedar deck and a sunken courtyard with a fountain and raised brick planters. The refined interior design is a tasteful blending of predominately historical period rooms with an updates kitchen, completely redecorated lower floor and an impressive contemporary Master Suite with city views. Exquisite interior architectural details abound throughout the home, including original hardwood and marble floors, plaster walls, hardwood and tile wainscots, crown moldings, coffered ceilings, period fixtures and an abundance of trim accents. The Thomas Prince House is located in Northeast Portland in the celebrated Olmsted Park Plat. This neighborhood was designed in accordance with the Portland City Beautiful Plan in 1908 by the prestigious Boston based Olmsted Brothers landscape architectural firm. The Thomas Prince House is one of five distinguished homes in the neighborhood that have been awarded the honor of being listed on the National Register of Historic places.  More Less
