Built c1760 by the legendary Jabez Bacon, Connecticutâ??s first millionaire merchant, the house is just off Main Street among a tapestry of museums and other historic houses. A preservationistâ??s dream, the Bacon house has been lovingly and carefully restored by owners who were stewards of Connecticut history. The owner for the last 55 years was a key figure of preservation efforts in the state and a founder of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. It is truly a house for the connoisseur. The Bacon house is a superb example of the Georgian style with a gambrel roof and exquisite pedimented front door. The extraordinary interior architectural detail is a tribute to the highest level of 18th Century craftsmanship. The paneling in each of the Formal Rooms and Bedrooms is of a different design. Original English Delft tiles grace three of the seven fireplaces. The elegant Dining Room and Parlor, each with a fireplace and paneled walls, inspire large gatherings. At the rear of the house is a cozy, informal Family Room/Library â??; originally the Keeping Room. It has the largest of the fireplaces complete with 2 beehive ovens. Bookcases line the walls and a door at the end of the room opens to a small stone patio. The Kitchen with a bay window overlooks the rear lawn. On the second and third floors are 4 generously proportioned Bedrooms and 3 Baths. A charming 1-Bedroom apartment with a separate entrance is attached to the house. It includes a fireplace and Breezeway. Following the same architectural lines as the main house, an adjacent Summer Kitchen has historic significance. It is believed to predate the residence and is a rare example of a surviving New England free-standing Summer Kitchen. This marvelous building has a massive fireplace with hand-wrought cooking crane and beehive oven. Upstairs a loft area includes an unusually large smoke chamber complete with the original hooks for smoking meat. A private screened porch with stone floor links the Summer Kitchen to the landscape. Nearby an early 2-story barn with unique details serves as garage and workshop space. Lovely lawns with old shade trees and flowering shrubs radiate out to the side and rear of the house. The Jabez Bacon House is within walking distance of all the village amenities and has a front view of preserved open space. A path along the Pomperaug River is within strolling distance of the house. The Bacon House is in the Woodbury Historic District. In addition, there is a Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation easement on the façade. Part of the property is in open space and other preservation easements will be in place prior to closing. Woodbury, a major New England antiques center, is ideally located for travel to major cities and Litchfield County cultural activities while offering the delights of small town living.…More Less
