My Notes

This mid-century 2-level home, built in 1959, retains its contemporary lines, walls of windows, and wide overhanging eaves. Extensive remodeling over the last decade took the house down to its studs, updated systems, and gave it fine traditional detailing with one-of-a-kind features. Located on a quiet street only a stones throw from the shores of Lake Washington, this unique property would be right at home on the Mediterranean coast. It has been transformed into an exotic urban oasis with a series of terraces, lush plantings, and unexpected delights. A multi-level front yard features a bocce ball court and tranquil sitting area. A tall Sequoia tree original to the site now shares space with sub-tropical plantings and a collection of large pots that will remain with the house. Double doors open to an entry with slate floors. Off the entry is a large living room with a high vaulted ceiling clad in dark-stained wood. Wrap-around windows with plantation shutters look out on the front yard. A dominant feature of the room is a gas fireplace with a custom-built mantel that incorporates French corbels dating to the early 1800s. Floors on main level day rooms and bedrooms are hardwood. An arched passage leads to an adjoining family room with built-in bookshelves and cabinetry for media equipment. This room, like many on the main level, has a skylight that provides an abundance of natural light. French doors with plantation shutters open to the upper level of the terraced back yard, as do French doors in the dining room. The dining room, accessed from the entry hall by 18th century folding latticed doors, has a high sloped ceiling with crown molding. A beautifully appointed chefs kitchen has Italian tile floors and backsplash. Custom wood cabinetry was designed to complement a large scale 18th century English butlers pantry that covers one wall. Counters are butcher block. A bay window over the sink and a skylight provide natural light. Appliances include a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Miele dishwasher, Dacor warming drawer, and DCS 4-burner gas range with hood. A walk-in pantry affords additional storage space.A hallway off the entry leads to the two bedrooms on the main level. Double doors open to the master suite, which has its own private deck with stairs to the back terrace. Other features include a skylight, built-in cabinetry for entertainment equipment, and a large adjacent dressing room lined with closets. The master bedroom and bath share a see-through gas fireplace. The tile-appointed master bath has a jetted tub, glass-walled shower with double heads, double sinks set in an antique sideboard, and a bidet. A second smaller bedroom currently functions as a home office. It is served by a three-quarter bath with a skylight and pedestal sink. Also located off the hall is a utility room with laundry facilities, a work sink, storage closet and access to the attic.A split staircase with a brass handrail in the entry area leads to a finished lower level that could serve as a separate apartment. A hall with tile floors at the bottom of the stairs leads to a spacious living room with its own kitchen. The kitchen has custom cabinetry, tile backsplash, and butcher block counters. It is equipped with a Magic Chef mini-refrigerator, electric Bosch oven, and GE dishwasher. French doors at one end of the living room open to a smaller space that could be used as an office or additional sleeping quarters. A big separate bedroom has a gas fireplace with a wood mantel. A three-quarter bath with tile floors and a sink set in an antique corner cabinet serves the lower level. A mechanical room off the bedroom houses a gas furnace, large capacity water heater, and air-conditioning equipment. An attached garage can be accessed from the lower level hall. A pair of heavy old doors from a Chinese compound guard the entrance to a temperature-controlled, 2,000-bottle wine cellar. The garage has spaces for three vehicles, two of them in tandem.
