Floor plan coming. Built in 1893 and designed by Swedish architect Magnus Dahlander, 562 Bergen Street has true pride of place in its corner location. With a grand arched entrance on the long side of the house, there is no long and narrow feel to this exquisitely crafted townhouse. Its corner location offers so many advantages - windows on 3 sides, gardens all around, and more opportunity for fa&ccedilade ornamentation. Dahlander did a masterful job with his combination of rough-hewn brick and rusticated brownstone, adding a 4 story turret and highly ornamented entrance. The current owners have been wonderful stewards of the house's architectural heritage while updating it for today's needs. On the garden level is a large and lovely kitchen with cherry cabinets, honed limestone counters, and stainless steel appliances. There is a kitchen eating area adjacent to the garden and a pantry area for storage and serving. The formal dining room is on this floor and has original wainscoting and a lovely mantle. On the parlor floor, beautiful details remain and coexist in harmony with contemporary furniture. There is a vestibule inside the front door with fabulous original stained glass and oak paneling. The front parlor is graced with another original mantle, a pier mirror and the turreted window composition which lets in so much light. The rear library has its built-in shelves and cabinetry in place, while the office in the extension has large windows. All floors are original parquet and in excellent condition. There are 2 bedroom floors, each with 2 large bedrooms and a full bath. The renovation on these floors is extensive, modernizing the closets and dressing areas. The original detail remains here as well, with custom-designed mantles, gleaming wood floors, stained glass windows, and more. Both baths are beautifully updated with light streaming in. Mechanical upgrades to the house include all new plumbing, a new roof, a recently replaced boiler and hot water heater, double-paned, tilt-in windows everywhere, electrical upgrades, and fa&ccedilade restoration. The list of improvements is too long to report here. A full cellar is perfect for storage. Last but not least is a lovely, mature and professionally landscaped garden. It is surrounded by a warm and weathered brick wall and contains many artistic features - a pond, a fountain, and a gate structure modeled after the Japanese gate in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
