My Notes

This Craftsman-style Bungalow with stone and cedar exterior is a truly unique and one of a kind home. As part of the Sauer Buildings Historic District - a group of buildings designed and built by German-born architect Frederick Sauer and later featured in a Rick Sebak documentary about unique homes in Pittsburgh - this home features many "fairy tale" features like arched doorways, unusual stonework, an overhanging stone balcony, and beautiful original wood work and interior doors in the Craftsman style. The yard is unusually large for Aspinwall as is the integral garage and large brick driveway. Ongoing landscaping includes a native and edible landscape plan incorporating fruit trees, grape vines, berry patches and more. Other recent improvements include the creation of a breakfast room from 5th bedroom adjacent to kitchen; new hardwood throughout the main living level; restoration of bath (which still includes original tile, sink and toilet from 1920s), refinished hardwood floors in upper level, full house central air conditioning, new stainless steel kitchen appliances, and four skylights.
For more information regarding the historic district see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauer_Buildings_Historic_District.
Neighborhood Description: Wonderful "village" atmosphere with just 1,000 homes. Walk to coffee shops, corner markets , movies, and a major retail center. Terrific "small town" events like parades and family camp out nights in the two parks. Excellent school district, one of the tops in the region and state. Minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, but with a true small town feel.

What I love about the home

The house is an historic attention grabber. People constantly stop on the sidewalk to ask about its history and tell us what they know. Many claim it is their favorite house in the area. It really looks like a little castle from a fairy tale. The stone balcony, front porch and back patio are great escapes.
