My Notes

Edit
Front of home is Flemish Bond brickwork. The house is a four story rowhouse with a good-size patio/garden in the rear. The front part of the house was built in the 1780s and the rear is from about 100 years later. The first floor consists of a living room and full bath in the front and a family room/den with a very large fireplace in the rear. The second floor has a bedroom with ½ bath in the rear and a large, dramatic kitchen/dining area with fireplace in the front of the house---a natural area for ?hanging out?. Third floor has a bedroom in rear and another ?with fireplace--in front with an office area?also with fireplace--- in the center. There is a full bath, walk-in closet and a number of other closets. The fourth floor is one large room with a lot of storage. Basement runs the full extent of the house, consists of two large open spaces, and is an excellent storage area. There are large wall expanses suitable for hanging large artwork and many builtin bookcases throughout.
Neighborhood Description
The area is one of the oldest in the city because it is along the Delaware River which was one of the world?s most active ports. There was a large and varied immigrant community associated with work at the port and enterprises that were related to port activities. Since the 1970?s the neighborhood has become gentrified but is still probably more diverse than any in the city. The residents are: students, teachers, retired people, office workers, service workers, hospital staff, contractors, professionals, artists, etc and there is a great racial, ethnic, and economic mix of residents. The architecture is as diverse as the population with everything from early 18th century to ranch homes and mansions. Active and powerful community association. The house is located very near many restaurants and coffeehouses as well as the Italian, Mexican, and Asian market areas. There are about 25 movie screens within a fifteen minute walk?about half showing films suitable for adults. We are a few blocks from the river and Penn?s Landing where there are many activities---ice skating, festivals, outdoor concerts, tall-ship watching. Easy public transportation access to center city shopping, museums, offices, hospitals---but easy walking too. Historic area 10 minutes walk away. A half dozen bookstores near and the new location of the FringeArts Festival. Several small sitdown or dogwalking parks closeby. Farmers markets from midspring till the fall and various nearby festivals all year long. One block from great viewing of July4 and New years fireworks along the river. Fleisher Art School and Settlement Music school within ½ mile. Many and varied churches, temples, and synagogues in area. Meredith is a highly regarded public school and there are a number of fine private schools in the area. South street constantly active. And there are always folks out walking somewhere.

What I love about the home

Our patio/garden where we can entertain in the summer. The large kitchen/dining area where we have been able to entertain large numbers of people. The wall space that allows display of large paintings and wall hangings. The (dangerously large) storage space. The feeling of privacy despite living in a rowhouse in a densely populated neighborhood. The area is one of the oldest in the city being along the Delaware River which was an active port.
