This is a home in which the owner(s) set a "dream price" - a price they'd be willing to sell it for, as well as to test the waters and gauge interest. This property is not found on a multiple listing service (MLS).
The house is upside down to take advantage of the best harbor views on the top floor (as are many of the homes in the neighborhood). We have three bedrooms on the first floor with two full baths, laundry room and utility room; upstairs is mostly open, with a fireplaced living room, dining area, eat in granite/stainless/maple kitchen with breakfast bar, half bath, large family room with built-in bookcases, wet bar and small fridge, computer/playroom with a wood stove, guest room (we have also used it as an au pair suite) with an enormous walk-in closet and a full bath.
There are two low-ceilinged basements: one (with easy outdoor access and where we store out of season furniture and the kayaks) was recently fully insulated; the other is accessible from the front hallway closet.
The garage is for a single car. It has a second floor, which we now use for storage. Our kids used it as a playhouse when they were small.
I am an enthusiastic gardener, so the landscaping is pretty good and requires little serious maintenance. We have parking for seven cars. We keep a second lawn mower in the backyard shed for easy mowing.
There are views of Salem Harbor from every room and deck.
Architecture fans will note this is a New England-modified mid-century modern house; one of the first year-round houses in the neighborhood, built in the late 1950s. The original house was just two-bedroom, but there were three big additions in the 1980s: the back guest room, computer room and bath, the two-story master bedroom/bath and big family room, and the second floor over the garage.
We are in a historic area, near the site of the Tom Bowen Tavern in the 1600s, where the men would spend their Sundays after taking the women and children to the Green Street Ferry to go to church in Salem (as Marblehead had none). Naugus Head was a summer colony for most of the 20th century. Naugus Head was also the site of Fort Miller for many years, guarding Salem Harbor. Earlier, Naugus Head was a summer campground for the Naumkeag tribe.
There is a right-of-way on the south side of the house from Sparhawk Terrace to Naugus Ave. for easy outdoor access to the backyard from both streets. The Naugus Head Association maintains the four neighborhood-shared parcels of land: boating beach, bathing beach, top of Sparhawk, and the Sparhawk/Naugus triangle. Association dues are $100 per house per year, which includes maintenance, social activities (summer barbeque, etc.) and insurance. We also share the property taxes according to the size of the property; in our case, about $38 per year.
We have landscaped, built the back deck, replaced about half the windows, replaced the kitchen (maple cabinets, Sub Zero refrigerator, Wolf stove, Miele dishwasher, trash compactor, etc.), replaced the house roof (it is rubber now and should last forever) and the garage roof, replaced the driveway, replaced the lower deck and the front railings, installed the outdoor shower and hot tub, renovated all the bathrooms, replaced the awnings, replaced the heating system and insulated the basement. Everything has been well maintained.
