Description
The house was built in 1893 by J.A. Yancey, who was a Danville grocer. He lived in the house just prior to his death in May 1900, when the house was sold to Samuel D. Rickman. It transferred hands several times until a fire and partial demolition took its toll. The house was slated for demolition and was rescued just 10 days before the wrecking ball was to move in. A historically sensitive rear addition was designed and added by local architect Richard Morris, using German lap siding and other details to blend both the new and old seamlessly. The original front portion still maintains the captain?s wheel fretwork in both the front and side gable ends. Eastlake style details include a rake board terminating in a semi-circular end with rosette detail; horizontal panels with diagonal beaded boards supply accent under the front porch windows as well as banding over the second floor windows. Sawed balusters and brackets were added to the front porch to replace wrought iron alterations done in the 1960s. As you enter the home through stained glass paneled double doors, the interior still evokes a Victorian past with heart pine flooring and original moldings (the architect had a knife cut to replicate the moldings that were used in the new addition). Cast iron rim locks still keep the heart pine four panel doors secured to this day. The home features four original fireplaces with cast iron surrounds and mantles, two of which are located in the formal living room and dining room which also features a silver and china closet. The addition features a sunroom with a tiger wood ceiling, keeping room open to a period style kitchen. Quarter sawed oak counter tops, fire clay farm sink and bead board custom cabinets add to the charm. There is a center island with granite for a large prep and work area that also houses a tremendous amount of additional storage. The side hallway features wainscoting and period style wallpaper, a laundry room with large storage closet and a powder room with antique sink cabinet. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a hall bath in the original section and a master suite complete with his and her walk in closets in the new portion. The yard is landscaped with many different varieties of shrubs and flowers. The rear of the property has parking for three vehicles as well as plenty of room for a carriage house. This Eastlake home is within walking distance to the developing downtown river district that includes new restaurants, shops, the river trail and several cultural outlets. It is within one block of the "Five Forks" district which is being revitalized through public/private ventures. It is also located across the street from a neighborhood park. Incredible value for the amount of restoration that has been done.More Less
