My Notes

This is a rare opportunity to own a true piece of Virginia's History! Known as Tally Ho Farm, this historic 50 acre property offers a look back into Virginia's history with the potential to begin your future in organic farming. The main home was built, according to court records and family research, in 1760. It sits far back from a well maintained road surrounded by white board fences. The main home is 2400 square feet with 5 working fireplaces, stunning, original pine floors upstairs, along with a second story library/studio flooded with light, and wood floors throughout. The kitchen and den with sun porch were added in the 1970's along with the fifth fireplace. This room is bright and welcoming, and like most homes, the heart of Tally Ho. After a disastrous fire in the 1990's, the owner began a major renovation to restore the home. The original pine floors were saved as well as its basic structural integrity. The roof was replaced with a standing seam tin roof, the interior was gutted, insulated, dry walled, fitted with new insulated windows and trim work. Just outside the main home is the farm office, currently in use by the present owner to conduct his many business ventures. It is reconstructed, inspired by the original fireplace. It has a vaulted ceiling, pine floor, tin roof, and front porch. This building, as well, has much history. When the farm was owned in the 1800's by the Reynolds Family, Judge Reynolds used this as his office and often heard cases here. To the rear of the property, there is a rustic guest cottage which currently rents for $800/month. It is 1/4 mile from the main house overlooking the 2 acre spring fed pond. It has one bedroom and a sleeping loft, one bath, living area with large stone fireplace (13' exposed interior face), dining area opening to an exterior deck and a screened front porch. The topography of the land makes it a good site for organic farming as "the lay of the land" lends itself to two good watersheds. In fact this protected Tally Ho from intense soil erosion during the hundred years leading up to and through the Great Depression. This could also be easily converted into a horse farm. There is a 60,000 square foot event/ show area with separate highway entrance. Whether your dream is to raise horses or cattle, or to raise organic produce (and there is a strong market in both Richmond and Charlottesville), you can do it all at Tally Ho Farm. Then you can begin your own history at this graceful home that has welcomed many friends

What I love about the home

This listing includes the main home which was built before the Revolutionary War, a farm office built in the 1850's which served as an office for Judge Reynolds who owned the farm at the time, and 2 creeks that feed the spring for the pond which fronts the 1100 square foot cabin which produces $800.00 per month in rental income which could also be used as a guest cottage.( Zillow has created their Zestimate using only one parcel of three for estimating the value of this property. They used a parcel which includes only 5 acres and the main house for which there are few comparable homes left standing since 1760.) The assessment is over $325,000 and does not take into account the historical value of this estate. It must be seen to understand the true value.
