My Notes

    Own an Acre of Plandome Manor HistoryBuilt circa 1780 and have a choice of Manhasset or Port Washington Schools. This Plandome Manor home has been expanded and updated.  Family owned for 4 generations, it upholds its pastoral heritage while also balancing historic appeal and modern updates. The main floor consists of Living Room with Fireplace, Dining Room, Eat-in-Kitchen, Office, Mudroom/Laundry and full Bath.  Above-ground lower level has a walk-out Family Room with Fireplace, Powder Room and also has a 2-car heated garage as well as an expansive workshop.  The second level boasts the Master Bedroom w/walk-in closet and three family bedrooms as well. There is a full attic for storage. The magnificently manicured, private, park-like acre has a French clay tennis court surrounded by mature trees, stone walls and slate patio and includes specimen plantings.  There is in-ground irrigation as well and includes a utility shed.  Details include mortise and tenon solid cedar beam construction, wide plank and heart pine flooring, exposed beams, triple insulation on 1st and 2nd floors, original pot-bellied stove, 2 fireplaces, central vacuum system, 200 amp wiring, back-up generator which will run the entire home and a French clay tennis court.  Beach, dock and mooring rights are available through the Manhasset Bay Estates Association with paid dues.  Plandome Manor/LIRR parking pass eligible for Plandome Train station.  It's History:  The main part of the house was built by Nicholas LuQuer around 1780 and was located on the shore of Leeds Pond.  At some unknown date it was transported to Gull's Cove and became the guesthouse to the Fleischmann estate. In 1911, the house was moved again to where it now sits.  At that time it was the end of LuQuer Road.  Moving a house was not uncommon...the house was jacked up, greased logs slid under, a team of eight horses attached, and the house was slid to the new site.  Of course there were no overhead electrical wires or permits needed to hinder the move. When the time came for the house to be "slid", my Grand Aunt, Mary Louise Wagner, refused to vacate the house.  Instead she went about her chores while the house was moving?sleeping, eating (it took 2 or 3 days) and she reported not a single pane of glass or dish was broken.  The trip was about a quarter of a mile and ended at the base of what is now called "LuQuer Hill' a very steep portion of road.   My Grand Uncle, Ed Wagner, a graduate civil engineer designed and built LuQuer Road and reportedly said, " I will  not be responsible for building a road up that damn hill".  And that's why the house sits where it is today, at the base of that "damn hill".From 1780 to 1864, LuQuer, who was an Episcopal minister owned the house and farmland.  The current seller's great, great, great grandfather, Jon Wagner, was recruited by LuQuer to join a company he was founding during the Civil War, the Brooklyn 14th -- the Zouves.  He fought in eleven battles and was killed in the Battle of Spottsylvania in 1864.  Mr. LuQuer felt so bad he gave the house and lands to the surviving widow Mary Wagner and her three sons.  Since then, the house has been passed down generation to generation and finally to the seller, the last generation on his mother's side of the Wagner family.
