My Notes

The home has had the same owners/occupants since mid-1982. Originally built in 1938, the home underwent a major renovation in 1989-90 which added a second story, completely remodeled and enlarged the kitchen and added a den. The second floor contains a master bedroom complex with two walk-in closets, a dressing area with skylight and built-in dressers, a large master bath with jetted tub and a separate shower for two with twin shower heads. The master bedroom is accessed through a pair of interior French doors and is accented with a bay window seating area. Also on the upper floor is a second bedroom and a second full bath with tub/shower. That bath was completed in 2008. Downstairs the living room and separate, formal dining room have plantation shutters on all windows. The kitchen offers a built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator and built-in oven, a vented gas cooktop, microwave, dishwasher and disposals in both the main and food prep sinks. A third bedroom downstairs can easily be used as an office. The third full bath is downstairs and contains twin face bowls and a tub/shower. A spacious central hallway leads to the staircase to the second floor and also opens into a den through another pair of interior French doors. The den provides access to the back yard. However, the den could easily be utilized as a fourth bedroom if circumstances required and it was designed with that possibility in mind. There are hardwood floors in the living room, dining room, kitchen (maple), hallway and stairs, and the master bedroom. Floors in the master bathroom and the upstairs second bathroom are tiled. The downstairs bedroom and den, the guest bedroom, and the walk-in closets in the master bedroom are carpeted. The rear yard was relandscaped in 2012 and the exterior repainted in September 2013 -- new pictures to follow. The driveway is full length concrete. It was poured in 1990 after the renovation of the house.
Neighborhood Description
This home is located in Palm Haven, one of four designated Historic Conservation Areas within San Jose. Palm Haven was designed as a Residence Park in 1913 and contains over 100 homes in an irregular shaped five square block area with a small Plaza at the center and several sets of historic pillars at the original entry points. Between 2002 and 2007 the seven pillars (three pairs and one in the central Plaza) were restored through the efforts of the residents, with support from the City of San Jose, at a cost of over $125,000.00. This gives an indication of the pride the residents take in this historic San Jose neighborhood. There is an annual 4th of July picnic in the Plaza. The location is absolutely wonderful in terms of access to public transportation, freeways, services and activities. Interstate 280 is only a few minutes away. Downtown San Jose and the HP Pavilion (home of the San Jose Sharks hockey team) are less than a ten minute drive and San Jose International Airport can be reached in about 15 minutes. Also about 15 minutes away are two major shopping complexes. The town center of the Willow Glen region of San Jose is less than a mile from Palm Haven, within easy walking distance, and offers local restaurants, shops and services (including banks and a cleaners.) There are several light rail stations within five minutes drive or less, and another station is planned. A CalTrain station near the HP Pavilion offers transportation up the peninsula to San Francisco. For more information about Palm Haven see the web site http://palmhaven.info/ .

What I love about the home

The home admits a great deal of natural light and has a feeling of spaciousness. There is a considerable amount of storage space, including the twin walk-in closets in the master bedroom complex. There is a secret space with a low ceiling under the stairs that is perfect for storing holiday decorations (and it would be a terrific club house for smaller children.) The space is accessed via a hall closet and is lighted. Some of my favorite features are the arched living room window, twin arched windows on the landing to the second floor, a built-in window seat in the den, and the use of archways rather than doors to open up access to the central hall, kitchen and dining room. The front walk and patio are covered with terra cota tile, as are the rear and side entryways. There is a small, covered, tiled porch off the living room which provides access to the side of the house and is ideal for storing a limited quantity of firewood. The peninsula portion of the kitchen counter contains the food-prep sink, but also provides a cozy place for two persons to dine (or for neighbors to visit over a glass of wine.) An open wine rack sized to hold two cases is built into the end of the peninsula. And, it is great to reside in one of the historic neighborhoods of San Jose (see the section about the neighborhood below.)
