As a grandparent I think Irving Elementary School is top drawer. My grandchild is thriving in the school's atmosphere. I would also like to acknowledge the administrative staff in the office. Helpful kind and accommodating! Keep up the good work our youngsters' successes will be your reward!

Irving is the oldest elementary school in town. It is centrally located and houses both the Year Round and Traditional calendars. We opted for the YRE program. YRE is a wonderful option in Indianola and parents in Des Moines and other towns are often envious of this program. It is ideal for working parents as children learn throughout the year and have the added benefit of breaks & intersession enrichment options rather than long summers in which they become bored and out of the learning mode. There are a wide variety of students at all academic levels and our teachers adjust to accommodate students' needs. The PTO group works hard and is very active. This is a great way to meet other parents and be involved in your child's education. Irving is fortunate to have YRE & we are proud to say our progressive town offers it.

Irving houses the YRE (year-round education) option for the Indianola school district in addition to a traditional calendar. YRE is open to all K-5 students in the district. Two of our four children have been enrolled in the YRE program since kindergarten (they are entering 3rd and 2nd grades respectively) and we could not be more pleased. The teachers are excellent and have worked hard to challenge our children and their peers who are at the top of the class. The YRE program begins mid-July after a 6-week summer break with 3-week fall and spring breaks (compared to 1-week for the traditional calendar). YRE students have the option to attend 'intersessions' which are 1-week enrichment classes in a wide variety of subjects offered during two of the three weeks of fall and spring breaks. Test-scores are (unofficially) higher. Parents are extremely involved at Irving with a very active PTO and 'class parent's.
