My child is not challenged in the classroom and is bored. The home work is at the level expected 2 grades lower. The teacher teaches to the lowest level in the classroom and we are looking for another school where our child will be challenged and pushed beyond very basic skills.
As part of the new re-zoning in the Duval County Public Schools my daughter was assigned to attend Abess Park next year. We received the invitation for the Abess Park School Open House. We attended the Open House yesterday and our experience was AWESOME!!!. The welcome and harmonious atmosphere was great. All the staff (Principal Vice Principal teachers and other support personnel) were most helpful. The school also organized a group of current students from the school to help by providing tours around the school to the prospective new students and their parents. I think that was a GREAT idea! We feel confident and are looking forward to having a great school year for our daughter. Thank You!
Abess Park Elementary is a fantastic school! My eldest left Abess and went right into Landmark Honors well prepared. My youngest in fourth grade maintains a high grade point average thanks to all of her dedicated teachers. Mrs. Wells knows the students by name and is continuously in the classrooms. Every phone call or note that I have sent in to Mrs. Wells or the teacher was answered immediately and professionally. Children and parents are treated with the utmost respect. Lots of positive incentives for the children. PTA is very involved and supportive. Abess Park is #1!
As a new parent/student I was disappointed at the disorganization and lack of communication at this school starting with orientation. Orientation lasted about 10 min in the cafeteria where we were given two handouts concerning PTA. "No" instructions on car rider lanes parent pick up daily school running and most importantly no introduction or sight of the principal. Teachers were introduced we followed a guide to the classrooms where the classroom was is absolute disarray. Parents walked around the classroom for 5 minutes and the teacher said we would go over everything at open house which happens to be a month after schools starts. Every time I asked to meet with the teacher or get questions answered I was put off until a later date or their was no response. Principal does not return phone calls and doesn't communicate with parents. Very hands off principal.
I couldn't say enough good things about Abess Park. My son adores it the teachers are kind and caring. The school truly has a family like atmosphere.
I can't say enough good things about Abess. My daughter went to Abess from K-5 then to Landmark 6-8 in Honors Academy. She has been accepted into Paxon IB program for high school not just because she is smart but because she was given the academic background she needed to become successful. My other daughter is in 5th now & will be going to Landmark Honors again with the great training from Abess. They have many rewards in place for students that excel in one way or another - academics attendance sports behavior etc. Last but not least they do not tolerate disruptive and poorly behaved students. You can be assured that if there is a safety issue or a child that disupts the class they will be sent to the office so it does not take away from the other students learning.
My child attended ABESS Park from K-2nd grade until we moved. I was very dissapointed in the way he was treated along with many other students. The teachers seem to want to have an easy day. They are approachable sometimes but most of the time rude. The cafeteria well your child is treated like they are in boot camp. They are talked down to and made to feel like nothing. I know this first hand because I have been there and eaten with him at lunchtime many times. For the few that are pleasant they are a blessing. (Mrs. Conaway Ms. Jackie). I am glad we are no longer in this school. My child is doing very well and thriving in the new school. Children should be able to be themselves and not feel that they are a problem afterall is that not what the teachers are getting paid to do.
The ESE teachers at Abess Park are wonderful! Thank you Mrs. Walker for making learning for my daughter fun and exciting! The ESE teacher worked extremely hard to make sure that my child's needs were meet! Great school!
This is such an amazing school! I can't say enough positive things about it. What a loving caring and safe environment for my children to grow up in. I know that my children are loved taken care of and have their days filled with learning. What a blessing to have Abess as our school!
My daughter has attended Abess Park since Kindergarten. She is currently in 4th. She was reading with no problems by the 3rd month of Kindergarten. Thank you Mrs. Nehrbass! The teachers have been great every year. The principal is very caring loving and knows almost every student by name. I've had nothing but great experiences with this school. Teachers and parents are very involved. I know my daughter will miss this school after next year.
My daughter has attended Abess for four years. This school strives for your childs sucess. The teachers are wonderful and all of the staff. I would highly recommend this school.
The Principal and VP @ Abess are very good w/the students and always seem to be so approving and friendly. The teachers are knowledgable and friendly and approachable. The students are clean sweet and friends w/one another.
I have had the opportunity to observe in the autistic program at Abess this year. I was so amazed at how the teachers and students were focused on a set schedule yet sensative to the children when changes occured. There are many engaging activities to keep these young minds productive and verbally interactive. The love and dedication the staff gave the children was evident very consistent. Every child is treated with respect and guided at their own level to help them achieve growth in all areas of learning and social development. I was amazed at how well the children was intune with each other and the teacher. These children of the autistic program at Abess are very blessed to have this wonderful program and dedicated staff available to them!
So far in the year of 2007-08..I have been really disappointed in the ESE program at this school. As long as you are a parent who just drops off picks up and smile and nods you will do great. But if you have a concern about your child or what may be hurting them The staff is extremely defensive. Especially the Site Director.
As a former Abess Park parent and substitute teacher I can say with experience and confidence that Abess Park is one of the best elementary schools in Jacksonville. Both my daughter and son attended this school and always had fine teachers. My daughter although now in high school still misses the school and likes to visit when she can. The teachers and staff are loving and caring but discipline is enforced consistently which make the students some of the most well behaved elementary kids I have encountered as a sub. The school has a challenging curriculum along with extra curricular activities including chorus drama club and chess club to name a few. There is also a good program for special needs kids. Parent involvement is high at the school with volunteers on a daily basis. The school is in a safe area surrounded by nice neighborhoods recently developed.
My child has been attending Abess since kindergarten she is going to the third grade this year. I feel confident that my child is receiving the best attention and education possible when she walks out the door.
This was a good school when we attended in 2002-2003. The safety level was high and my child enjoyed his kindergarten experience there. However wehen we begain 1st grade in Texas my son was nearly a year behind the other children. Not sure if this was a FL to TX thing or the school in particular.
Great school. Teachers are attentive to individual students needs. Staff is friendly and very involved in student success.
The involvement of the teachers principal office staff etc. is horrid. No one really seems to care at all about the children and only that their days are as easy as possible. I always feel like I am treated as a nuisance if I ask for information on my child's progress at school.
