My daughter attended Kainalu for Kindergarten and is now in first grade and we are happy with the school. We're a military family here for three years and researched the few pockets of good public schools in Oahu. We chose to live in Kailua because of this and love Kainalu. My daughter had classes in Hawaiian cultural studies and an after-school program in Mandarin Chinese. She's learning a lot in core subjects and challenged along the way. Her teachers had 10+ and 20+ years of teaching experience and were great partners in learning.

We are a military family and had heard negative reports about Hawaii's public schools. Nothing could be further from the truth at Kainalu. We absolutely love this school. The curriculum is the most challenging our kids (4th and 5th grade) have ever had. We have seen no teaching to standardized tests here - instead they are focused on skills that kids will need in life - critical thinking reading comprehension writing speaking and presentation skills. The teachers are fabulous and obviously dedicated to the kids and the principal is always present at every event cheering the kids on. I wish our kids had started here in kindergarten and wish they could finish the rest of their elementary years here!
Exceeded my expectations for my two boys. Between the two of them we experienced K - 3 and I would recommend this elementary school over other area schools based on my experiences. Approachable & professional teachers along with a dedicated support staff allow this school to bust the myth regarding Hawaii schools being bad. The principal encourages parents to get involved and volunteer. The philosophy at this school is that they are a partner in our children's education to support us as parents. The facilities may not look pretty but the environment is safe welcoming warm and the kids enjoy being on campus.
I have two kids that go to Kainalu and they love it. So do I. The curriculum is strong there are lots of extra curricular and other activities that keep the families involved with the school in a fun and informative way. The student body is great as well a lot of good nice smart kids with good parents.
We are SO happy that this is the school in our neighborhood. All sorts of family stuff going on that makes for a very community feeling school!
My daughter is currently in 5th grade and has attended Kainalu since Kindergarten She especially enjoys all of the extracurricular activities. She is involved in the environmental Green Team Chorus Morning News Tech Club and Zumba. They have stepped up their academics in the past few years and seem to have a rigorous and dynamic curriculum with a strong focus on Language Arts and Math. We enjoy all of the family functions and love the feeling of ohana. Many many many wonderful teachers and students!
great ohana - teachers that care!
I moved my son from a nearby school and he is VERY happy at Kainalu. When picking him up at the beginning of the year he had a skip in his step and he kept thanking me over and over for sending him to Kainalu. He likes his teacher and pretty much everything. And he just loves his PLAYTIME in the afterschool program. I feel so relaxed when I pick him up. I feel that happiness in school is so important and it has to be real and spontaneous. Kainalu has that and more. My son can be a challenge on occation and could use extra help in reading but he's coming along. Kainalu is a happy place just as an elementary school should be. The principal and vice principal are in the weave of the fabric. Who needs the directives of the BOE ? 5 stars! He still loves it.
I am very pleased with the staff and teachers at Kainalu. The Principal and Vice Principal show their love for the kids many times when i used to drop off my daughter the Vice Principal Mr.Graham would be out in the front of the school greeting all the kids dropped off by car or bus. He was warm and funny and knew most of the kids by name. Ms. Sunabe was always warm and friendly as well as the administration staff. The teachers my daughter has had would keep me informed of her strengths and weaknesses and always asked how they can help her more as far as working together (we had to make adjustments in Kindergarten with her). The school sends her home every night except Friday with homework and on Thursdays she brings home a folder with flyers regarding information of whats going on at Kainalu. Overall it's Excellent.
My daughter attended Kainalu from Kindergarden through 6th grade and every teacher was a gem! The office staff are great and I could not have found a better school public OR private. The feeling of family continues to this day. We still visit Kainalu even though my daughter is in 9th grade now.
The academic program at this school is awesome. The third grade teachers are especially strong in both teaching and very nurturing.overall the teachers all seem to care and go the extra mile to help the students. I especially like the schoolwide R.Log and they also have good test results on the HSA.As a parent and volunteer I know that the 3rd and 4th grade teachers are solid and are consistent in what they are teaching amongst their grade level. The only downside is the playground is 'bare'.
I love what Kainalu elementary has shown my 5th grader. We are so blessed to be apart of a school that shows so much interest in their student ohana. Walk through the halls and feel the aloha. The teachers EA's administration and cafetorial staff are absolutely wonderful. What a gem we have stumbled upon. We count ourselves lucky when it comes to the education of our child @ Kainalu. The AGT program is so in tact so productive and we as parents are thrilled to have our child here! One visit will have you hooked. Check it out for yourselves!
We moved here from Southern California in a community where the public schools are excellent. I used this website to target the community we wanted to send our 3 kids to school. Kainalu has an awesome PTA Principal and a fabulous afterschool program with lots of fun innovative choices for the kids.
The 4th grade teachers showed no communication with the parents they showed no support to our kids.. I would not recommend this school.....
Kainalu is a Gem! Simply stated. You have to be here and be a part of Kainalu to see for yourself! I've been here for 5 years and I remain very impressed!
Kainalu has been a part of our lives for the last 5 years. I love the super friendly atmosphere and cheerfulness of staff members. It helps to make it easy to be around the school. I feel truly blessed to be a part of the wonderful spirit of Aloha that is Kainalu! The teachers my 4th grader has had thus far have been instrumental in the growing process of learning for him. I know its a testament to not only parenting but to the nutruring nature of his teachers. Anyone who comes here can see how lucky the parents of Kainalu are to be a here. The AGT Student Council Chorus Hula PTA and KidBiz300 programs make Kainalu special. If only Kainalu went up to 12th grade. I never want to leave. My 4th grader has made lifetimes friends here. We are forever fans of Kainalu..Go Dolphins!
Kainalu has a good group of teachers. The staff in the front office is welcoming and knowledgable. Priniciple and VP really have a love for the school and the students. The parent participation is low but the ones involved work very very hard for both the student and staff to make Kainalu great. Wonderful afterschool programs all unique and inviting. PTA is outstanding.
My son has attended Kainalu since kindergarten and is currently in 3rd grade. I love that it's 'hidden' in the Kailua community (not on busy highway or congested area). It's a very safe and relaxed campus which promotes learning. Kainalu's teachers (regular & special ed) are caring and professional. The academic programs offered are Hawaii standard/required courses. Kainalu is special in that they offer a variety of after-school programs (ukulele hula chorus percussion lego robotics japanese magic comic book creation brain child/study hall) all instructed by volunteer teachers & staff. These programs are wonderful and make for more creative and happy kids! Kainalu has an active PTA and as with any school parent involvement is key. It's not just the school's responsibility to teach your child; parents and students are equally responsible for learning. Aloha!
As far as the academic aspect of Kainalu I am somewhat satisfied with my daughters 1st grade education. Her teacher is a wonderful woman and I think she is doing a good job however all of the kindergarten teachers from the previous year teach at an inconsistent rate. For example I knew a child in another kindergarten class that had at least 2 writing assignments each night while my daughters teacher sent maybe one home every other day. Now I know all children are different but even my daughters current teacher has said that she has noticed a significant difference in reading and writing skills in the children who attended different classes. Aside from that the school has great parent involvment great after school programs and a very caring staff...MUCH better than the school on MCBH.
My daughter attends Kindergarten at Kainalu. So far it has been a great learning experience for her! They have great parent involvement friendly staff and afterschool programs and even workshops for the whole family. There is nothing bad I can say this school is amazing and the staff there do a wonderful job! About the music and art not being taught until the 5th grade that's for the students who want to sign up for it later as an extracurricular activity. Music and art are being learned in the classroom. It's just not what done everyday.
