California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

I absolutely LOVE Maryland Avenue Elementary School. My kids love there teachers and the teachers show that they care for each and every student that comes through the door. The office staff is also very patient and some know each student by name. I wish more schools were like this.

lousy. no different than any other school in the La Mesa Spring Valley School District. The Superintendant is doing a poor job.

We are finding this school a delight! The atmosphere and the energy is positive uplifting and very friendly. I have seen the principal and staff at every event and even bag groceries at Fresh n' Easy night. They are very accessible also. Each event put on by the PTA is very well attended!! The teachers are very dedicated. Our teacher has gone out of her way to help us. My child goes to school happy and comes home happy every day. That makes me happy!

My son attends preschool at Maryland Avenue and I could not be more pleased. He has never been in any type of daycare or preschool setting before so naturally I was nervous about his first preschool experience. The preschool teachers Mrs. Woods Mrs. Knapp and Ms. Kaitlin were all very warm reassuring and welcoming. They provide a fantastic learning environment with lots of arts crafts music reading and general learning that prepares the children for Kindergarten. The teachers work well together and create an environment of friendship and teamwork among the children. My son is excited about preschool each day and never clings to me or cries when I drop him off. When I ask him his feedback on his preschool he usually says that he had a great day and will talk excitedly about the events of his school day. Lastly the quality of the school grounds class room materials and snacks are high as well. I am thrilled and grateful for the high quality educational foundation my son is getting at the Maryland Ave Elementary School.

this year is my child's first year at this school and it has been a great experience. As a parent I had many concerns down to the end but one I met his teacher Mrs. Gasper she is wonderful and eager for parental assistance. My son is learning so much and is eager to wake up early just to get to school I feel confident having my child there and proud of the hard work of the teachers and staff who work very hard to care for the kids and their safety.

I like that the school has small classes and they try to get to know all the parents and get them involved in our kids school work. My child has attend here for 2 years and has show lots of growth.

Great school. The teachers staff and programs have been instrumental in my childrens' learning. The after school program is also terrific as well as the PTA. I recently moved out of the district and truly miss Maryland Ave.

I am extremely satisfied with Maryland Ave. Elem. My son is attending for his 4th year now and he really enjoys the overall atmosphere of the school. He gets involved in afterschool programs and we attend all of the fundraising events. My son attended a different school for his Kinder year and moving him to Maryland Ave. District was one of the best decisions I've made. Class size here at Maryland is better then most in San Diego School District. I do think that parent involvement is very important in any school especially if you are unhappy about how things are being ran. Join the PTA or whatever it takes to voice your opinion to make changes when needed. Don't go unheard when it comes to your child's education!

school was a big let down this year my child attended this school since kindergarten and not until recent did I realize it was a very judgemental enviroment. This years teacher was rude to me as a parent and my child as well. I would not recommened this school. Maryland Avenue was a bust!

Mrs. Newman 4th grade teacher is awesome. She really takes time to specialize to the needs of the individual student. The new principal is severly lacking in her interest and inclusion of the dhh students. Dr. Reed made sure to include all students and was very hands on.

Maryland has a homey feel. The PTA is very active and provides a lot of extras for the students. The after school program is wonderful and very affordable. I like that the school offers alanguage program and after school science programs. My daughter loved having a male teacher.

The teachers are extremely dedicated to the children. The school is very small so the class ratios are small. Creativity in classrooms is high.

My daughter has really enjoyed the school and overall I am happy with the academic programs.

Campus is too open - should be more secure during school hours.

Maryland Avenue School is a very good public elementary. They have top test scores and great teachers. The new principal is like a breath of fresh air. Good parent participation and growing parent participation. The school has gotten a very diverse student body over the past 7 years. We currently have our youngest child enrolled for first grade. Our two oldest boys graduated from Maryland and when they entered Middle school were able to qualify for Gate placement. (The boys were not able to pass the gate test given in elementary!) Our third child is on an IEP and came out of a special day classroom. His current teacher has done wonderful with him and we will continue to keep him enrolled at Maryland in a regular ed classroom. We feel the extracurricular activities are lacking but feel we have plenty in out community to make up for this.

Great school great PTA Great Teachers and staff. Can't go wrong by choosing this school. Like with all schools there are some bumps in the road but none that can't easily be overcome. Teachers work hard at there jobs and you can see that teaching is still important to them. The PTA works hard to bring great events to all the students and to show the teachers how much they are appreciated.

Maryland is a great school. I went there and my daughter went there. It has great teachers and is a nice location. They have a great deaf and hard of hearing program.

As the parent of a Kindergartener I have already experienced the joy of this wonderful school. It is a superb environment for students and parents alike to grow and learn from a knowledgable and caring staff. I look forward to many more years at Maryland Avenue.
