California Standards Test (CST)

In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

In 2012-2013 California used the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students' skills in English language arts and mathematics. The results for grade 10 students taking the test for the first time are displayed on GreatSchools profiles. The CAHSEE is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined by the state of California. Students must pass all parts of the CAHSEE in order to graduate from high school. If they do not pass it the first time, students have multiple opportunities to retake the test. The goal is for all students to pass both sections of the test.

This school is an amazing school with great parents and parental involvement. The Principals and administrative staff are excellent as are the teachers and coaches.

I graduated LHS back in 2004. The staff was a bit short and rude at times but they were also dealing with a TON of chemically imbalanced adolescents...I'd be a bit short too lol I've read on here about students complaining about riots and problems in school...it is a PUBLIC school in the Long Beach Unified School District...its (by no shape) a 10 star private school. There are just as many problems here as there is at Millikan or Downey High. I believe Lakewood did the best they could with the funds they were supplied through the city and the LBUSD. If I were still back in Lakewood CA I would have no problem having my son attend LHS (frankly LHS is probably better than most of the public AND private schools out here in AZ). Go Lancers ]

So far this school is great I don't believe that it is a horrible school it's just that the student are disgruntled that they have nowhere to smoke without getting caught and disrespecting fellow students.

Hi I am a student of lakewood. I have been going to this school for only one year and already I thinks this is the WORST school I have ever been to. The staff at lakewood are the rudest people alive. The teachers "could care less about us as long as they get paid" as said by my biology teacher. There is always fights at this school. There has been about 4 riots since I've been here. The special ed kids are mistreated as I have witnessed. Most of my teachers don't even teach they just give us worksheets. The principle to my eyes is over paid and does nothing he's hardly ever at the school. My parents and I agreed that I will do homeschooling because the rest of the school around here a ghetto and overcrowded. I've also heard from staff that the school is going to be cutting classes.

My daughter will be a Senior this year. Our experience at this school has been wonderful and most of her teachers thats she's had have shown an interest in her education.

They have tons of different activities for the kids to keep them in school. The best is their honor choir-music dept. They put on a hugh musical every year and plus sing at different funtions. They even go on a musical cruise every year and sing. Funds are raised by the students and parents for them do to this.

Hello I was a former student at Lakewood High School. I'd like to say that this school is a wide diverse campus for you or your child to learn. Although there is occasional racial tension I believe that it's a wonderful place to get to know others and their cultures. My teachers cared and worked hard for the students that actually tried to keep up in the class. I don't believe it's the teacher's fault as to why some students fail it's because they choose to do that and some also have a bad attitude towards learning itself. Is it really the teacher's entire responsibility to keep the students on their feet? No! The student must also be willing to learn in order to succeed. Lakewood is a one of a kind experience something you must experience firsthand.

I thought this school would be great but I guess I set my expectations too high. There are a lot of teachers that don't care and a lot of racism at this school.

Hi there! I'm a current student at Lakewood High School. I am in the Merit Scholars SLC which is somewhat challenging. The curriculum is a bit more advanced. I take Algebra 1-2 Kinesiology PE Computer Applications French 1-2 Biology 1-2 and English 1-2 accelerated. If you're looking for a good program for your academically challenged child I do recommend Merit Scholars. Other academies/SLCs I recommend are either Odyssey or ATM. Since the first day of school Lakewood High School is a great place to learn. Link Crew welcomes incoming freshman through orientation. Throughout the year I've experienced the days of a typical Lakewood High student. My sister is an Odyssey sophomore and soon my other sister will be joining Lakewood as an Odyssey freshman. The sports are great the teachers are great we try to keep the campus clean etc. Pick Lakewood! GO LANCERS! =]

I am alumni. You aren't going to get much better than LAKEWOOD in the Long Beach School District Baby!! This school will provide your child with an A+ education regardless if you want to get involved as a parent! Look at the other choices. Security is top notch here and so are the teachers. The arts and athletics are most excellent. GO LANCERS!!

I have gone to Lakewood for 4 years and I have been in the Odyssey program the entire time and I love it. Lakewood is a wonderful school. They have so many program choices such as; Odyssey for those intrested in Marine Biology and the ocean. Merit for the GATE students. ATM for students who wish to work with computers. PALMS for the students that want to go into medical school or become firefighters or police. The ARTS which is a program for the more creative students who are intrested in music theater or becoming an artist. GLOBE for people who want to work in buisness. HERO is a program for those intrested in Culinary arts or fasion/interior design. NJROTC is a military program and AVID which pushes the students who otherwise would not attend college. The teachers staff and students are wonderful and it is a great learning enviroment.

teachers here treat their students differently if they like them they're in the game. Teachers seem to give kids who are rude more chances. When the quietest kids will say one thing and get a detention

Lakewood was my fisrt choice in highschools not only becuase it has extrodinary prgrams such as Merit Sholars ATM Odyssey etc. It has alot of great teachers they are so helpful. They also have oustanding princapals Mr. Ocasta is one of the best he makes the transition from Middle School to highschool so easy and of course the student body in general are great you can make friends easily at lakewood wether your that shy kid in the corner or the class clown everyone fits in at lakewood. My opinion and I am sure in the opinion of so many other students Lakewood Highschool is the number one school in the Disrict. if you don not belive me check it out for yourself.

There are so many programs and clubs that students could choose from. And our academic programs are remarkable.

As a parent of a current and also a past student I have to say I am very diappointed in the school and there sp ed program. Most of the program has been cut leaving these children drowning in total failure. This district and this school is all about test scores and the students who can give them a good name. It makes me sick as a parent to stand by a watch your child sink. We the parents of these students have spent our childrens whole lives trying to seek justice for a fair break for these kids. We are not asking you to just pass them but to remember they are differant types of learners and deserve a chance like every one else.
