My son attends this school for kindergarden and 1st grade. My daughter attends pre-k. Staff are friendly tho I didn't care for his kindergarten teacher she seemed too young and short patienced with the children. My sons first year of school with her was miserable for him he dreaded going almost every morning. Education wise they are alright. They focus alot on reading so you'll have to homeschool your child with math if you want them to be above average. The principal was very attentive last year this year not as much. They keep changing the bus times drivers etc. Yesterday the school dismissed students almost 30 minutes early the bus driver let my kids out at the bus stop alone. My kids told the driver no one was there for them yet he told them they had to get off the bus. My 5&6 year olds walked home alone. The school never called or emailed to say they were letting out early. No problems with my daughters teachers but I will say I taught her how to write her name numbers address etc. aside from this she hasn't learned much from what I can see. I don't think I can do another year here.

As a parent coming from private school to public I was very concerned with the amount of care that could be given to my first grader. Rock Chapel (Mrs. Hudson & Mrs. Walker) have welcomed my son with open arms! They have kept in constant communication with any of my questions or concerns helped my son adjust to public school and it's schedule and just made our transition from private to public smooth. I appreciate the open door policy they both have as well as the Counselor & Principal have. This school is improving and completely begins with PARENT involvement with a child's education. The school's can't do it alone. So with this being said you get out of the school what you put into it. These reviews on here are sometimes written by parents who expect to just drop of their child and the teacher performs magic over you child. Teachers are PARTNERS with Parents and at the school that is what SUCCESS comes from. Without the PARENT involved don't expect your child to excel. I don't mean to preach but it is what it is.
Our child is in PreK at Rock Chapel so we are very new to the school. I cannot share a huge amount of feedback of the staff as a whole but I can say this- the PreK teacher Ms. Williams is awesome!!! We've been very happy with the way she helped our son adjust to being in school. She was voted Teacher of the Year this year and it is well deserved. Even before we enrolled our son there we heard great things about her. We have not been disappointed. The principal seems very professional and is very visible and accessible. I also like that when we call the school the phone is answered in a very professional and friendly manner.
Rock Chapel School is a Great School where children feel safe and are constantly engaged in the learning environment. Mrs. Jennings is a Great School Principal who cares about my child.
I love you Rock Chapel and so does my child Zenita. It has changed lots from 07. My daughter attends and I'm sad to take her out we are moving back to New York. Thank you Mrs. Coffin you are a wonderful teacher. Mrs. Jennings the principal is great at her job. The staff and parents care very much for our kids. Its a family feeling environment. I believe all of the staff knows all the kids by name which says alot. My daughter is on Principal Honor Roll list for the second semester. I like that they test the kids nationally so we know how their doing and where they may need help. Also that they reward all the kids almost daily with bull dog bucks my daughter loved pushing herself to do better so she purchase things in school. Rock Chapel you were her rock and will be missed.
The school is average. My daughter was in the first grade for the 2006-2007 school year. Teacher out a lot. Didn't return calls. Not attentive. Had to work to get results. If you are looking for a school with less work for you this is not the one. Overall it's average but could be better due to great location and community. Upper-middle class.
Not at all pleased. School seems extremely harsh for an elementary school. The main focus seems to be keeping kids in line vs. teaching them. Not all kids are delinquent. Additionally I question what my child is learning when I see her homework and assignments. How can you cram 6.5 hours of learning into a young children and expect them to retain it all? Kids burn out just like adults.
Our children are new to Rock Chapel and I can say I am impressed with the Principle's view regarding our children education;they like the school and there teachers. I commend faculty/staff/teachers who really love the teach and have a dedicated heart to want to help our children that really want to learn and give 100% in learning.. So keep up the good work.
my child attended Rock Chapel from pre-k to 5th grade and I can say I have been satisfied with the teachers and principal. The staff works well with the parents and students. The students feel safe and have a lot of fun while learning. I can say that the level of parent involvment could be a lot better but that is not the schools fault it is the parents. The school offers music arts and other fun extracurricular activities for the kids. I do think there should be more academic clubs or programs for the students for motivation and some athletic programs too.
Rock Chapel....I can't blame the Rock Chapel 100% but what I can say is that it is sad that schools are forced by the Board of Education to met certain scores. My son is diagnosed with ADHD and is an honor roll student but because of his condition and the teachers having to meet their goals my son is consistently put out of class and/or written up. When trying to work with teachers the first thing they want to know is he taking medication instead of trying to work together to control my son's diagnosed behavior. So my son will likely fail academically at Rock Chapel because numbers have to be met.
Rock Chapel Elementary seems more like a military school than a school for learning and teaching. The principal is very hard on the parents as well with the students! It's hard for the staff to work with parents instead of blaming them and helping them solve many of issues within the walls of Rock Chapel. As a tax payer of Dekalb county I hope Rock Chapel does better for the school year '2004'.
This school is one of the ones that doesn't inform parents about anything. I have yet to recieve anything in the mail about when school starts or when open house is. Sure they have it on the sign in front of the school but it doesn't tell you a time.
