About These Groups

The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

1. New Suburbanites

   —Mobile suburban singles.

   A high proportion of these pre-middle-age to middle-age singles have moved to the suburbs in the past 4 years. Some have a college education and work in professional or management careers.

2. Upwardly Mobile

   —Suburban couples living in mobile homes.

   A higher than average percentage of these married couples with no children live in mobile homes or non-conventional homes (boats, RVs, etc.). Education level varies from high school to college.

3. Secure Suburbanites

   —Suburban families with low financial pressure.

   Monthly costs as a percentage of income are much lower than the national average. Education level varies from high school to college with some holding management positions. Most own their homes.
