The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

1. Easy Street

   —High-income suburban couples without children.

   Middle-aged married couples living a comfortable life in suburbia with no dependents. A majority are homeowners.

2. Pinching Pennies

   —Lower-scale suburban singles.

   These pre-middle-age to middle-age singles bring in lower incomes. Some rent their homes, while others own. Education level varies from high school or lower to college.

3. Single in the Suburbs

   —Middle- to upper-income singles living in the suburbs.

   Singles ranging in age from 30s to 60s who earn a comfortable income. Some own their homes, and their careers range from management to service industry.
