About These Groups

The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

1. Rat Racers

   —Dual-income suburban families.

   These married couples with children lead very busy lives, with most bringing in two paychecks per household. Education level varies from high school to college.

2. Affluent DINKs

   —High-income, kid-free couples living in the suburbs.

   Middle-age Dual Income No Kids couple bringing in two attractive incomes. Most are highly educated and are employed in management professions. A high proportion are homeowners.

3. Single in the Suburbs

   —Middle- to upper-income singles living in the suburbs.

   Singles ranging in age from 30s to 60s who earn a comfortable income. Some own their homes, and their careers range from management to service industry.
