About These Groups

The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

1. Stretching Couples

   —High-income, high- expense suburban couples.

   These married couples without children earn handsome salaries, but have significantly higher mortgages than the national average. Most own their homes, and some have a college education.

2. Single in the Suburbs

   —Middle- to upper-income singles living in the suburbs.

   Singles ranging in age from 30s to 60s who earn a comfortable income. Some own their homes, and their careers range from management to service industry.

3. Leave It to Beaver

   —Middle- to upper-income suburban families.

   Ranging in age from 30s to 50s, these married couples with children are likely to own their home and work in management, professional, or skill-based occupations. Education level varies from high school to college.
