About These Groups

The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

1. Shoestring Singles

   —Downscale, striving singles.

   Struggling urban singles that are on a tight budget, making minimum wage and working in service jobs. Most have a high school education or lower and most rent.

2. Corporate Climbers

   —High-income, high-expense urban singles.

   Urban singles with an up-and-coming income, but with higher-than-average living costs. Most have college educations and are employed in mid-management professions.

3. Urban Bootstrappers

   —Lower-scale single parents living in the city.

   Single parents who support themselves and their children on a low income. A high proportion are female. Most have a high school education or lower, and most rent their homes.
