About These Groups

The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

1. Shoestring Singles

   —Downscale, striving singles.

   Struggling urban singles that are on a tight budget, making minimum wage and working in service jobs. Most have a high school education or lower and most rent.

2. Non-native Newbies

   —Foreign-born individuals who just moved to U.S.

   A significant proportion of people who have moved to the U.S. from Puerto Rico, the U.S. Island Areas, or a foreign country. Wide age range. Some have a high school or college education, and they work in a variety of occupations.

3. Scrappy Homeowners

   —Homeowning urban singles with low income.

   Pre-middle-age to middle-age singles on a lower to middle income who own their own home. Some have a college education and work in services and the professional sector.
