The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

1. Suburban Empty Nesters

   —Older suburban couples with grown-up children.

   Ranging in age from lower 50s to mid-60s, these couples have children that have left the nest. Most earn middle to upper incomes and own their homes.

2. Renting Singles

   —Singles renting in the suburbs.

   A higher than average proportion of these 30- to 60-year-olds rent their homes. Education varies from high school or lower to college.

3. Self-sufficient Seniors

   —Suburban seniors who live alone.

   More than 40% either live alone or live with non-relatives. Some are homeowners. Education level varies from high school or lower to college.
