The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

   —Urban single parents.

   These single parents are making ends meet with moderate income. Some went on to college, while others finished high school or lower. Most work in service, management, or professional occupations.

2. Bright Lights, Big City

   —Very mobile singles living in the city.

   Singles ranging in age from early 20s to mid-40s who have moved to an urban setting. Most rent their apartment or condo. Some have a college education and work in services and the professional sector.

3. Carefree Urban Couples

   —Younger married couples without children.

   Young childless couples living in the city. Most own their own homes. Education varies from high school to college with some holding mid-management positions.
