About These Groups

The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

1. Suburban Empty Nesters

   —Older suburban couples with grown-up children.

   Ranging in age from lower 50s to mid-60s, these couples have children that have left the nest. Most earn middle to upper incomes and own their homes.

2. Suburban Retirees

   —Seniors over 65 who live in the suburbs.

   These seniors are living out their retirement years in suburbia. Most own their homes, and some have college degrees.

3. Country Clubbers

   —Wealthy married couples with children.

   These affluent families live a very comfortable life in the suburbs. More than 20% have a family income over $125,000. Most have earned a college or graduate school degree, and most own their homes.
